In 1997, the series Hand Bringing Life and Bread (Gyvybę ir duoną nešančios rankos) started to be published. The books of the series appeared in 1999, 2005, and the last one – in 2009. The aim of the books was to inform the Lithuanian public about examples of humanism during the Holocaust and those special people who went against the current, against the occupation government, against a large part of public opinion and desire.

В 1997 г. был начат выпуск серии книг «Руки, несущие жизнь и хлеб». Последующие книги этой серии появились в 1999, 2005, последняя – в 2009 г. During the realisation of the project, the Righteous Gentiles Department of the museum collected and recorded around 1,800 pages of text material about the survivors and rescuers of Jewish people; around 6,000 photographs; around 60 hours of video material; and five hours of audio recordings. More than a half of this information has been carefully selected and provided for visitors to the museum. The most impressive material was selected for the stands and detailed information is available in the computer terminals.

В ходе осуществления этого проекта в отделе спасения и увековечивания памяти евреев музея были накоплены и записаны около 1800 страниц текстовых информационных материалов о спасшихся людях и спасителях евреев, около 6000 фотографий, около 60 часов видеоматериалов и 5 часов аудиоматериалов. Более половины этой информации было тщательно отобрано и представлено вниманию посетителей. Для стендов отобрана самая красноречивая информация, а на компьютерных терминалах можно найти более подробные материалы.

However, in those days of chaos, violence and mass murder, there were very brave and determined people who could no longer watch what was going on around and instead looked for ways to help save at least a few lives. Such behaviour is very important and cannot be compared to even very important assistance granted in normal peaceful conditions. These people were not affected by Nazi propaganda. We have dedicated 20 stands to these outstanding rescuers of Jewish people in our new exhibition.

И в эти дни хаоса, насилия и массовых экзекуций также находились чрезвычайно храбрые и решительные люди, которые не могли спокойно смотреть на происходящее вокруг и сами искали возможность спасти жизнь хотя бы нескольким людям. Такое поведение вызывает особое уважение, его нельзя сравнивать даже с оказанием очень важной помощи в мирное время. Эти люди не поддались нацистской пропаганде, и этим выдающимся спасителям евреев мы в своей новой экспозиции посвятили 20 стендов.

S. Girdenis contains information as follows: my cousin was a partisan in the woods and my brother was a partisan during the German times. This was written down in 1991. It was fixed, so it can be interpreted. Therefore, there are many more live and historical narrations about the partisans. So this is one more source which is already grouped, selected and designed, but, in my view, it may provide historians, ethnologists and sociologists with valuable information for their studies. These live memories and narrations may be very useful in a certain field. Moreover, the primary card-file consisting of 4.5 million cards is being digitalised and someday it will be available with all the dates, information providers, detailed geographical description, etc. So I encourage all of you to use this source in order to better understand our national identity, to experience the pleasure and imagination of our language, to discover the features of our national character (and sometimes they are not so attractive to us, i.e. it is illustrated that money is necessary for corruption; it is very difficult to imagine that such an illustration would be possible in an English language or German language dictionary), to revive our historical memory and to realise what is happening to us and inside of us in the 1st half of the 21st century. You are very welcome to the Institute of the Lithuanian Language where you can use this valuable source.

Another numerous and still living group of witnesses are war captives who became soldiers of enemy armies. During the war thousands of soldiers with Czechoslovak citizenship were serving in enemy armies – especially in the Wehrmacht. When thinking about territory of contemporary Czech Republic, we are talking especially about people from the boarder regions – national mixed Hlučín and Těšín regions, which were occupied by Germany after Munich agreement in October 1938. From historical reasons Germans considered Hlučín region a German territory and in Těšín region Nazis established a specific national policy. During occupation, most of the local Czech inhabitants became voluntarily or under pressure citizens of the German empire and therefore they were forced to serve in Wehrmacht. During the war some of them were taken to captivity or deserted and entered the Czechoslovak military forces. However, many of conscript young men were killed or ended in Soviet captivity for many years. They were deported to the captive or to the labor camps in the whole Soviet Union (most often in surroundings of large cities – Moscow, Leningrad). The length of their captivity was different - most of them spent from 1 till 5 years, but some of them could return home after 10 or more years. It depended on the living conditions in camps too but, in fact, in all camps the regime was tough, a labor was excessive, there was a lack of food – all these facts resulted in relatively high mortality.
