Bouchra Ouizguen (b. 1980) is a Moroccan dancer and choreographer. Born in Ouarzazate, she now lives and works in Marrakech where she has been committed to developing a local choreographic scene since 1998. Self-taught and an oriental dancer from the age of 16, she created her first experimental pieces such as Ana Ounta and Mort et moi based on her interest in film, literature and music. A co-founder with Taoufiq Izeddiou of the Anania association in 2002, she worked with the likes of Mathilde Monnier, Bernardo Montet, Boris Charmatz and Alain Buffard before setting up her own Compagnie O in 2010. She produces work inspired by questioning society, visual arts and popular arts in her country with a team she has built up on her journeys around Morocco. Multiple forms emerge from her work involving sound, performance and video. In 2010, she won the new choreographic talent award from France’s Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers (SACD) and an award from the Association of Theatre, Music and Dance Critics for the liberating Madame Plaza, in which she shared the stage with three performers steeped in the Aïta tradition. In 2011, she created the solo Voyage Cola with choreographer Alain Buffard for Sujets à Vif at the Festival d’Avignon. In 2012, she premiered HA! at the Festival Montpellier Danse, then in 2013 she performed it at the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. It provided the inspiration for Corbeaux, a piece presented for the first time at the Art Biennale in Marrakech in 2014. In 2015, she presented Ottof at the Festival Montpellier Danse then at the Festival d’Automne in Paris.
