Nel 1869 si stabilisce a Chiasso e riprende l'attività fotografica associandosi a Brunel; l'intesa fra i due non dura per molto e nel 1870 la bottega chiude. Si trasferisce definitivamente a Milano iscrivendosi a Brera. Dopo essersi diplomato torna in Ticino e prende casa a Davesco, dove muore nel 1923.

Sebbene sia un vero e proprio campione nella sua disciplina, per tutta la vita il Giambonini mantiene il tiro in quanto passione e svolge una normale attività lavorativa. Ormai 81enne, ottiene uno speciale riconoscimento per aver partecipato al concorso federale di campagna ottenendo ben 80 punti. Muore a Bellinzona l'8 agosto 1956.
Born on November 11th 1868, when only fourteen years old, Domenico Giambonini from Gandria won his first sport shooting medal in Italy. In the course of his lifetime, he was to win 600 awards; in fact, he is among the greatest sport shooters Ticino has ever known. Although he was a real champion, Giambonini kept practicing sport shooting as a passion and hobby and continued his normal working activity. At 81, he was awarded a special acknowledgement for having participated in a federal country competition obtaining as many as 80 points. He died in Bellinzona on August 8, 1956.
