Pripravljena mora biti tudi, da prevzame vse pravne pravice in obveznosti, ki izhajajo iz pogodbe. Pravzaprav mora izraziti svojo privolitev, ki se veže na pogodbo. Običajno do tega pride s podpisom in ratifikacijo pogodbe, v kolikor pa je že v veljavi, mora k njej le pristopiti.

To become party to a treaty, a State must express, through a concrete act, its willingness to undertake the legal rights and obligations contained in the treaty - it must "consent to be bound" by the treaty. This is usually accomplished through signature and ratification of the treaty, or if it's already in force, by accession to it.

Um Vertragspartei zu werden, muss ein Staat konkret seine Bereitschaft zum Ausdruck bringen, die Rechte und Verpflichtungen aus dem Vertrag anzunehmen - er muss seine "Zustimmung bekunden, durch das Übereinkommen gebunden zu sein". Üblicherweise geschieht dies durch Unterzeichnung und Ratifizierung des Vertrages, oder, wenn er schon in Kraft ist, durch Beitritt.

Egy egyezményhez egy Tagállam úgy tud csatlakozni, hogy nyilatkozattal kifejezi azon hajlandóságát, hogy az egyezményben leírt jogokat és kötelezettségeket kötelező erejűként ismeri el magára nézve - vagyis "belegyezik, hogy kötve legyen" az egyezmény által. Ezt rendszerint az egyezmény aláírásával és ratifikálásával teszik; vagy, abban az esetben, ha már érvényben van, az egyezményhez csatlakoznak.
