It was with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that I began the walk having taken a train to Chester.  Only 400 metres beyond the official start alongside the River Dee I met Ieuan from Machynlleth who was also beginning the walk, but he planned to achieve it in small stages as time off work allowed.

I was attempting to erect my tent when Alison appeared and told me to use a mobile home she owned as she considered it impossible to camp that night. The rain thundered on the roof of the rocking caravan all night, whilst I enjoyed a night of luxury. Alison was my guardian angel that night.

To save a couple of miles I paid £3 for a ticket to walk across Newport suspension bridge after climbing the 280 odd steps to the top I was having second thoughts. But as I said I had paid £3, so whistling the tune “Men Of Harlech”, I boldly strode across without looking down - conquering my fear of heights at the same time !

Families can take two wheels to cycle or walk around the wetlands centre near Llanelli. Try and spot some of the hundreds of bird species which are resident or visit here throughout the year – or take a trip past the water vole city. The centre is holding a spooky nature night on October 28, full of activities which include bat detecting, torch-lit pond exploration, frightening fairies and craft activities such as making bats, lanterns and spiders' web dream catchers. The evening will finish with a hot chocolate and treats, with prizes for the best costume.
