23. The closing ceremony of the 21st Ordinary Session took place on 24th April 1997. It was officiated by H.E Sidi Ould Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

- Par lettre n°ACHPR/SM/HRDA/86/12 du 7février 2012, nous avons adressé au gouvernement de la République Islamique de Mauritanie une Communication sur l’arrestation et la détention de Lehbous Ould Omar, Ely Ould Ravaa, Ell Mehdy Ould Lemrabott et Abdallahy Abou Diop, membres de l'Initiative de résurgence du mouvement abolitionniste en Mauritanie (IRA).
- By letter no ACHPR/SM/HRDA/86/12 of 7 February 2012, I sent a communication to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania concerning the arrest and detention of Lehbous Ould Omar, Ely Ould Ravaa, Ell Mehdy Ould Lemrabott and Abdallahy Abou Diop, members of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement in Mauritania (IRA). By its letter no 019/2012/AMBA/RIM/BJL, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in The Gambia transmitted the Note Verbale from its Government referenced 451/MAEC of 13 March 2012 in which it refutes the allegations of illegal detention; informs the Commission that the members of the IRA had been released out of respect for the rules of procedure and outlines the legal measures taken to combat slavery in Mauritania;

His Excellency, President of the Federal Republic of Mauritania on 14 June 2011, following information received which indicated that on 15 May 2011, three juvenile offenders by the names of Mohamed Yahya Ould Salem, Seydina Aly Ould Ahmed and Zeine Ould Abedine Ould Ahmed have been sentenced to death in Mauritania. The Appeal was sent to remind the State to adhere to the Resolutions of the African Commission on the Moratorium and urge for measures to be put in place to prevent the execution of these juveniles.

Cette visite nous a permis d’engager un dialogue constructif avec les autorités mauritaniennes sur un certain nombre de questions liées aux défenseurs des droits de l’Homme, dont messieurs Hanefi Ould Dehah, directeur du site d'information "Taqadoumy" et Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid, président de l'Initiative de résurgence du mouvement abolitionniste en Mauritanie (IRA) et chargé de mission auprès de SOS-Esclaves.
3. This visit enabled us to engage constructive dialogue with the Mauritanian Authorities, with Mr. Hanefi Ould Dehah, Director of the Information website "Taqadoumy" and Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid, President of the Initiative of the Re-emergence of the Abolitionist movement in Mauritania (IRA) and Head of Mission of SOS-Esclaves on a number of human rights related issues. A detailed Report on this visit will be presented in private session at the earliest opportunity.

2. Ont pris part à la cérémonie d’ouverture, en présence des membres de la Commission , le Premier ministre de la République Islamique de Mauritanie, S.E.M. Cheikh EL Avia Ould Mohamed Khouna qu’accompagnaient des membres de son gouvernement, Son Excellence l’Ambassadeur Mamadou BAH, représentant le Secrétaire Général de l’OUA, le Secrétaire Général de la Commission Internationale des Juristes, M. Adama Dieng.
2. The opening ceremony was attended by Members of the Commission, the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Hon Cheik El Avia Ould Mohamed Khouna, officials of the government of Mauritania, H. E. Ambassador Mamadou Bah represented the Secretary General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the Secretary General of the International Commission of Jurists, Mr Adama Dieng. Also present at the opening ceremony were members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of governmental and non governmental organisations, members of the local and international press, and other dignitaries.
