Le padrone di casa dovevano amministrare l’economia domestica e svolgere le faccende quotidiane, anche se erano solo le donne di più uminili condizioni a farlo da sole; nelle case più agiate e a volte non molto agiate c’era qualche serva o schiava che aiutava nei lavori più pesanti; poteva dunque sembrare che le padrone di casa stessero spesso in ozio, ma come vedremo non era così, normalmente erano al corrente degli affari e dei redditi familiari e anche loro lavoravano con le mani.
