Ricevuta l'ordinazione sacerdotale nel 1975 a Veglia, l'anno stesso Josip Bozanić è stato nominato segretario vescovile. Nel maggio 1989, Papa Giovanni Paolo II lo ha nominato Vescovo coadiutore di Veglia, carica rivestita fino al novembre 1989, quando è stato chiamato a servire in veste di Vescovo diocesano di Veglia.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1975 in Krk, Josip Bozanić was appointed secretary to the bishop the same year. In May 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop coadjutor of Krk. He served as the bishop coadjutor until November 1989, when he became the diocesan bishop of Krk. In 1997, he was appointed the Archbishop of Zagreb. The same year, he was elected as the President of the Croatian Bishops' Conference. In 2002, he was re-elected as President of the Croatian Bishops' Conference and served until October 2007.

The Vatican legal framework recognizes the Canon Law as the primary source of legislation and the primary criterion for its interpretation. Furthermore, there are six organic laws and other ordinary laws specific to the Vatican City State. For matters not covered by Vatican laws, laws and other regulations issued by the Italian Republic are observed as supplementary, subject to prior approval by the competent Vatican authority. They are adopted on the condition that they do not conflict with the doctrine of divine law, the general principles of Canon Law or the provisions of the Lateran Pact and subsequent Agreements, and provided that they are applicable to the state of affairs existing in Vatican City (See law No LXXI on the source of law, promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI on 1 October 2008).

Nell’agosto 2009 è stato nominato Arcivescovo titolare di Acquapendente e Nunzio Apostolico in Venezuela e nell’agosto 2013 Segretario di Stato di Sua Santità Papa Francesco, il quale l’ha altresì aggregato al Collegio cardinalizio nel Concistoro del 22 febbraio 2014.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin was born in Schiavon (Italy) on January 17, 1955. He was ordained as a priest on April 27, 1980 in Vicenza, his diocese of origin and, after spending several years at the pastoral ministry, he began studying law. He completed his studies in 1986, graduating with a Degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a diploma in Diplomatic Sciences from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, where he had begun studying in 1983. Joining the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See in 1986, he offered his services at the Apostolic Nunciatures in Nigeria and Mexico, and, for 17 years, in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State, later becoming Undersecretary (2002-2009). In August 2009, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Aquipendium and Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela. In August 2013, he was made Secretary of State by His Holiness Pope Francis, who has also invited him to join the College of Cardinals in the Papal Consistory on February 22, 2014.
