The control of microbiological losses in the sugar refining process is discussed. The presence of bacteria and viruses in sugar crops reduces sugar yield and produces by-products, which then lower sugar purity and create problems in refining. Bacteria infest sugar cane and sugar beet primarily during the harvesting period. Minimizing the time between harvesting and refining is the most important factor in reducing microbial infections. Different methods of controlling bacteria during the actual refining period are presented. Several traditional chemical additives and their efficacy are reviewed. A combination of regulating temperature and chemical levels has proven to be more effective than any one method alone. Recent developments in biotechnology and chemical disinfectants are compared with traditional methods of bacteriological controls. Ozone and chlorine oxide are being increasingly employed. Evidence suggests that both bonding and bridging networks are important for newcomers, as they get accustomed to their new life in Canada. Informal networks may provide emotional support through bonding capital in terms of companionship, familiarity and a sense of stability between members from similar cultures, as well as through bridging capital that can foster understanding between cultures. The main question is to what extent do different forms of informal social networks perpetuate – or help people get out of – difficult situations.

Bis 2015 wird das gegenwärtige Angebot voraussichtlich um rund 1000 zusätzliche Betten erweitert. Von den neuen Hotels sind das Starling Hotel Lausanne, das sich auf dem Campus der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule gegenüber dem bekannten Rolex Learning Center befindet, das funktionale Etap Hotel in Bussigny im Westen von Lausanne, das Boutiquehotel Bourg 7, das im hübschen Örtchen Lutry am Seeufer liegt, und das gemütliche LHOTEL zu erwähnen. Dieses wurde als letztes erbaut und liegt im Zentrum des Flon-Quartiers, einem der lebhaftesten Quartiere der Stadt. 2013 sollte nach umfangreichen Renovationsarbeiten das Royal Savoy, das in einem wunderschönen bewaldeten Park liegt, seine Tore wieder öffnen. Ausserdem ist die Eröffnung des neuen Hotels Lavaux geplant.
