The fourth Conditional Management Plan applies to shellfish harvesting in Baynes Sound; the most active shellfish aquaculture region in B.C. In the sound, water quality may be adversely affected when substantial amounts of rainfall occur over a relatively short period of time, which may lead to runoff from the upland areas, increasing contamination levels in the marine environment. Baynes Sound is divided into different areas, with each having an established rainfall trigger amount for temporary shellfish harvesting closures.

“Please do not feed!” is the title of a major exhibition on the artistic portrayal of animals. The exhibition is being staged in the new wing of Villa Vauban and will showcase paintings, prints and sculptures spanning 900 years of art history. Exhibits from the museum’s own collection and numerous international loan items include works by Adriaen van der Velde, James Ward, Eugène Delacroix and Marc Chagall. In line with the chronological focus of the museum’s own collection, the exhibition places particular emphasis on the multi-faceted diversity of animal portrayals that developed from the 17th to the 20th century, a period during which artistic interest in the relationship between man and animal assumed unprecedented proportions. At the heart of the exhibition are depictions of farm and companion animals, which introduce exhibition visitors to a wide range of artistic and stylistic concepts, while also illustrating the related debate surrounding the underlying social changes of this period of time, which encompasses four centuries. The exhibition starts with the tradition of animal portrayal in art. During the Middle Ages, the animal was still widely cast bearing symbolic attributes of faith, from the demonic all the way to the sacred. It was subjected to the Christian interpretation of the relationship between humankind and the rest of the Creation. The mid-16th century saw a rise in popularity of so-called paradise landscapes and Noah’s ark themes, with the emphasis above all on portraying as many animals of as many species as possible, depicting them in characteristic views and stances.

Die künstlerische Darstellung von Tieren ist das Thema der großen Schau „Bitte nicht füttern!“ im Neubau der Villa Vauban, welche Gemälde, Grafik und Skulpturen aus 900 Jahren Kunstgeschichte zeigt. Unter den Exponaten aus eigenem Bestand und zahlreichen internationalen Leihgaben befinden sich Werke von Adriaen van de Velde, James Ward, Eugène Delacroix und Marc Chagall. Den zeitlichen Schwerpunkten der eigenen Sammlungen entsprechend, findet in der Ausstellung jener Facettenreichtum der Tierbilder besondere Berücksichtigung, der sich zwischen dem 17. und 20. Jahrhundert ausbildete, einer Zeit, während der das Interesse von Künstlern an der Mensch-Tier-Beziehung unüberschaubare Ausmaße annahm. Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung stehen Darstellungen von Nutz- und Haustieren. Diese sollen dem Ausstellungsbesucher nicht nur unterschiedliche künstlerische und stilistische Entwürfe vor Augen führen, sondern auch die damit verbundene Auseinandersetzung mit den grundlegenden gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen des vier Jahrhunderte umfassenden Zeitraums verdeutlichen. Die Ausstellung widmet sich zunächst der Tradition, Tiere in der Kunst darzustellen. Im Mittelalter war das Tier noch weithin mit symbolischen Attributen des Glaubens besetzt, vom Dämonischen bis hin zur Heiligkeit. Es unterlag der christlichen Deutung der Beziehung zwischen der Menschheit und der restlichen Schöpfung. Ab Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts kamen die sogenannten Paradieslandschaften und Arche-Noah-Motive in Mode. Hier ging es vor allem um die Darstellung einer möglichst großen Vielfalt von Tieren aller Gattungen in charakteristischen Ansichten und Haltungen.
