Michael Bogdanov, who was born in Neath, was a Welsh theatre, television, film and opera director of international repute. He directed in many of the world’s leading theatres and companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, La Scala, Sydney Opera House, The Burg Theatre, Vienna, The Guthrie Minneapolis, on Broadway and the West End. He was an Associate Director of the Royal National Theatre for eight years, directed eight productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company and co-founded the English Shakespeare Company in 1986 with actor Michael Pennington. He was Chief Executive of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, from 1989 – 1992 and in 2003 founded the Wales Theatre Company for whom he directed the musical Amazing Grace and a musical based on Colleen McCullough’s novel The Thorn Birds.
