This thesis in sociology focusses on river hydromorphological and ecological restoration. It aims at studying restoration projects in two Mediterranean watersheds, the Durance and Gardons rivers, from their design to their implementation up to the debates and controversies they may generate. It will pay a particular attention to the relations that different stakeholders have with rivers, including riverine residents whose practices we still know too little about, in order to understand the way these actors value them, and how they ally or oppose. This is a comparative study based on qualitative methods (interviews and ethnographic observation methods complemented with one or more focus group). As a proper reflection about nature politics, the thesis will question different projects and their meanings which go far beyond technical issues as they lead to the (re)creation of a particular state of socionature more or less longed for. It will also contribute to the analysis of the relevance, strength and legitimacy of local management policies of aquatic ecosystems.
