On June 11 and 12, 2009, CTHRC attended the 2009 ALLIES Learning Exchange in Vancouver, BC. The event was hosted by The Maytree Foundation with the support of Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. The Exchange brought together policy-makers, educators, and community stakeholders to learn about issues and strategies to actively match the skills of immigrants with the HR needs of employers. At the event, the CTHRC raised awareness of its products and program areas, as well as provided input from a sector council perspective on issues related to foreign credential recognition and immigration policy.

CTHRC presented an update on the development of the Door Staff National Occupational Standards (NOS) at the Semi-Annual Meeting of the Association of Liquor Licensing Authorities of Canada held February 3, 2009 in Toronto. This one-hour update was an opportunity for CTHRC to introduce and update delegates from all jurisdictions on the development of Door Staff NOS. During the presentation, the delegates learned about these standards and their relation to jurisdictional liquor regulations. The presentation highlighted that Door Staff NOS do not pertain to licensed security professionals. Delegates were advised that occupational standards are a voluntary tool provided at no cost to operators, managers, and educators to support hiring and training activities. It was concluded that the skills, knowledge, and attitudes contained in the Door Staff NOS would likely be helpful for hiring and training any staff who carry out safety-related activities in licensed establishments on a per request basis, part-time, or full-time. This would include Door Staff, Host/Hostess, and Floor Walkers, and could extend to other staff or management in bars, restaurants, or hotels.
