The first cornerstone is the study of new quantitative convergence structures in measure theoretic context, in particular on spaces of random variables and probability measures. We will mainly be concerned with structures strongly related to the p-Wasserstein distance, a topic popular for both applications and theoretical aspects.
Een eerste pijler is de theoretische studie van enkele kwantitatieve convergentiestructuren in maattheoretische context, in het bijzonder op ruimten van kansvariabelen en kansmaten. We bestuderen in de eerste plaats nieuwe structuren die meer inzicht verschaffen in de p-Wassersteinmetriek, die momenteel zowel wat betreft haar toepassingen als haar structurele aspecten actief onderzocht wordt. Een tweede pijler is het toetsen van de theoretische kennis aan verscheidene toepassingen in de stochastische analyse (convergentie van Fellerprocessen, martingalen en oplossingen van stochastische differ-entiaalvergelijkingen) en de statistiek (convergentie van reguliere schatters in parametrische en niet-parametrische modellen).

Abstract: “The objective of this paper is to present an R package, SCGLR, implementing a new PLS regression approach in the multivariate generalized linear framework. The method allows the joint modeling of random variables from different exponential family distributions, searching for common PLS-type components. We discuss several of the functions in the package focusing in particular on the two main ones: scglr and scglrCrossVal. The former constructs the components and performs the parameter estimation, while the latter selects the approriate number of components by cross-validation. The package is illustrated on an appropriate ecological dataset through which we aim at predicting the abundance of multiple tree genera given a large number of geo-referenced environmental variables.”

Phylogeny-based modeling of heterogeneity across the positions of multiple-sequence-alignments has generally been approached from two main perspectives. The first treats site-specificities as random variables drawn from a statistical law, and the likelihood function takes the form of an integral over this law.
Fondée sur la phylogénie, la modélisation de l’hétérogénéité entre les positions d’alignement de séquences multiples est habituellement abordée selon deux perspectives principales. La première considère les spécificités de site comme des variables aléatoires issues d’une loi statistique, et la fonction de vraisemblance prend la forme d’une intégrale par rapport à cette loi. La deuxième perspective attribue une variable distincte à chaque position, et, dans le cadre du maximum de vraisemblance, ajuste ces variables, ainsi que les paramètres globaux, de manière à optimiser une fonction de vraisemblance conjointe. Rappelons que si la première approche bénéficie des garanties statistiques de la théorie classique de la vraisemblance, la deuxième ne requiert aucune précaution particulière si les variables propres aux sites sont des variables en grande dimension. En utilisant un cadre de sélection de mutations fondé sur la phylogénie, nous montrons que la différence dans l’interprétation des variables propres aux sites permet d’expliquer les disparités des études récentes concernant la distribution des coefficients de sélection.

Since microsimulation produces not expected values but instead random variables distributed around the expected values, it is subject to another type of randomness: Monte Carlo variability. Every simulation experiment will produce different aggregate results.
Puisque la microsimulation produit non pas des valeurs prévues, mais plutôt des variable aléatoires distribuées autour des valeurs prévues, elle présente une autre forme de caractère aléatoire : la variabilité Monte Carlo, due au fait que chaque expérience de simulation produit des résultats agrégés différents. Bien que cela était fastidieux à l'époque où la puissance informatique était limitée, l'exécution d'un grand nombre d'expériences répétées et (ou) la simulation d'une grande population peut éliminer ce genre de caractère aléatoire et produire des renseignements précieux sur la distribution des résultats, en plus des estimations ponctuelles.

In our research we are developing models and methods for the capacity sizing and allocation and the S/R design phases for various combinations of storage location policies and storage and retrieval strategies. The requirements for storage capacity of the SKUs are modeled as random variables, and the arrivals of storage and retrieval orders constitute stochastic processes.
Gegenstand unserer Forschung sind Modelle und Methoden zur Unterstützung der Kapazitätsdimensionierung und -allokation sowie der Auslegung der Fördertechnik für unterschiedliche Kombinationen aus Lagerplatzvergabe- sowie Ein- und Auslagerstrategien. Dabei werden die Lagerplatzbedarfe als Zufallsvariablen und die Ankünfte von Ein- und Auslageraufträgen als stochastische Prozesse modelliert. Für die resultierenden stochastischen Optimierungs- und Analysemodelle entwickeln wir effiziente Verfahren der mathematischen Programmierung und der Kenngrößenanalyse stationärer Markov-Prozesse. In weiteren Untersuchungen interessieren wir uns für die Abhängigkeiten zwischen den einzelnen Teilproblemen der Lagerkonfiguration und Möglichkeiten, diese in einem rückgekoppelten Planungsansatz zu berücksichtigen.

Joachim Hagenauer, an information theoretician from Munich, showed that mutual information can be used for phylogenetic classification, for example by comparing DNA sequences with each other. The mutual information refers to the strength of the statistical relationship between two random variables.

We analyse the data by developing a hierarchical model. We consider the numbers of fish at each age from an individual boat to have a multinomial distribution, the parameters of which are themselves random variables.
In order to set quotas for the catch of commercial fish species such as cod, complex population dynamics models have been developed. An essential input to these models is the age distribution of the fish caught every year. This is estimated from fish sampled from boats as they land their catch. The major problem with this data is that although the number of fish sampled is large, there is a very large within-boat correlation, and the number of boats sampled is relatively small. Also the age distribution changes in space and time, and with the type of gear used by the boats.
