  Wein & Kulinarik - Jois...
The first mention of wine-growing in Jois dates from 1345 in the form of a donation document. In 1524, Queen Mary of Hungary invested the people of Geusz (Jois) with the 'Wine Charter of Jois', allowing the vintners to trade wine freely. So in those days wine could be exported from Jois to Bavaria, Moravia and Poland. Besides the Altenberg, also the Sätz, Auflangen, Hofäcker, Jungenberg, Kirchberg, Neuberg, Froschau, Steinäcker, Schieferberg and Hackelsberg belong to the oldest wine growing sites with special soil in Jois. Today Jois works about 420 hectares of vineyards on such different soils as loess, silt, slate, gneiss, lime stone, sand, brash and primary rock soils on various sites. Their locations often make the working of the land very labor intensive and challenging for the winegrowers to produce wine of the highest quality. The following types of wine are grown in Jois: Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Neuburger and Traminer, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir, Merlot und Cabernet Sauvignon.
