Logistics services provider St vd Brink has chosen to invest in sustainability: silent trailers, hybrid electric trucks and trucks running on LNG.

The company's next step was to invest in trucks running on LNG – liquefied natural gas, which happens to be the cleanest of all the fossil fuels. As Mulder explains, this does require a careful planning system, as there are currently only 20 petrol stations selling LNG in the Netherlands. He feels driving hybrid electric trucks make for a solid business case. "There are loading and unloading stations in the Netherlands that allow access to hybrid vehicles only, so in that sense our fleet is something of a niche in the market." St vd Brink has also been experimenting with innovative cooling engines, and its drivers are being trained and encouraged to drive as energy-efficiently as possible.

The Minister embraced the Dutch chairmanship of the EU to get her plans into a higher gear and to create support for the self-driving car among the other member states. This resulted in the ‘Declaration of Amsterdam on connected and automated driving’ that had been endorsed by the EU ministers of transport in April: important political support for the crucial development of a shared technical and legal framework for automated driving. “Driving takes you right over the border”, smiled Schultz, “so having a legal basis for automated driving in European countries would be highly desirable and, considering these rapid developments, essential as well.”

Haar doel?
Schultz won’t be returning to the next Dutch cabinet. Considering her enthusiasm for the dynamics in the automotive sector, it wouldn’t be that surprising if her next career move involved this sector. Where will we start seeing the Minister in 2017? She laughed. “I’m not thinking about my next job yet. I’ll probably remain a minister for more than another year.” She’ll need every minute if she wants to realise everything on her bucket list. In addition to getting automated driving off to a fast start, her list also includes the success of the Delta Coalition. Her goal? “More attention internationally for the problems faced by urban deltas, better knowledge exchange, and a real contribution to improving the living conditions of millions of people.” On land or at sea, Schultz knows exactly where she’s headed.

Kicken!'
The solution developed by second nominee Team FAST, a student start-up founded on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology, also revolves around energy storage. The company’s team manager and co-founder, Industrial Design student Max Aerts: ‘We were inspired by phenomena witnessed in the natural world. Plants generate energy during the day and store it at night so they can grow, and we were looking for a way to store renewable energy.’ His team happened to stumble on a catalytic converter developed by their university. ‘It was able to rapidly convert formic acid into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. We wanted to see if we could get a miniature vehicle to run on this mixture, and it worked: it turned out to be powerful enough to get a 20-centimetre car up and running! It was pretty thrilling to see.’

The customers of Carice BV also have a share in the ongoing development of the car. Holleman: 'We’re involving them actively in the production of the MK1, so that our product is fully tailored to the customer’s specific needs. Buyers can kit out the car according to their own tastes or add features like a ‘range extender’, a small petrol engine which can recharge the battery while you’re driving.' The model will only be available in one style: a convertible. After all, being behind the wheel with your head in the breeze is the purest form of driving.

A cow has two ends. She defecates and burps and both necessities involve huge amounts of CO2. If, apart from grass, animal feed can be developed that reduces methane or nitrous oxide in the cow’s stomach, the first battle will be won. This will result in less burping and manure to fertilise pastures. “The current manure is not suitable for this. Nowadays, farmers spread artificial fertilisers over their fields. It’s an upside-down world.” Joosten wants to return to square one. A disruptive thought: “Manure is not waste, but a source of nutrients. You can extract green gas from it and enrich soil with it. If you approach sustainability at the root, your products will be sustainable by nature.”

In 2010 the company received the Lean & Green Award for its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. These include the introduction of hybrid electric trucks, which can run on electricity for the last stretch of a journey and are therefore absolutely silent. Mulder: "It's a huge relief for people living in city centres, because hybrid trucks make the process of stocking shops a lot cleaner while producing a lot less noise at the same time."

The machine in question is the AutoStore, which consists of 30,000 plastic trays arranged like a massive box of toy blocks. Right above this structure, robotic trolleys are rolling back and forth, grabbing the trays with the correct products and taking them to one of the workers, who prepares them for shipment. The storage system is so efficient that the company can store 85 percent more goods using the same amount of space as a regular warehouse. This means the team at Active Ants can be sure that they can stay put for the time being.

In addition to water management, another field in which the Netherlands wants to lead the way is logistics innovation. This makes ‘connected and automated driving’ another theme that Schultz takes very seriously. The Minister has now become the leading ambassador in Europe for this new development and is working towards introducing automated driving to the market by 2019. But is this realistic given the need to overcome the substantial international political barriers to the self-driving car that still exist? Schultz thinks it is. “Vehicles are being designed with more and more automatic functions, and they’re already in the showrooms. Our government is stimulating this development, and we’d rather be ahead than behind these developments. A smart choice, especially when you see how fast innovations in this area are going.”

'Greening is something you have to do in phases,' says Mesters of Suiker Unie in agreement. 'So it is smart and beneficial that Rabobank is taking this approach. We’ve also been working for years on taking further steps forward in the field of greening. Our own trucks now run on green gas. And we recently had four wind turbines installed on our grounds. Greening is a long-term endeavour; the recoup period is naturally longer. But we stand behind it 100%, as does Rabobank. It has now become an important part of our business case: our customers can see that we make the greenest sugar.'

Young cyclist Merel van Beuningen, catching her breath after the race, has one piece of advice for the fat tyre racers: 'You just have to ride as fast as you can, with all your power.' 'Fabulous!' says Frans van Rijn, one of the organisers who have made it possible for the event to happen. 'You can see how proud the kids are to be riding alongside the best. They get to learn what sportsmanship is all about and they may end up falling permanently in love with the sport of cycling – at least, that’s what we’re hoping for. I’m a passionate racing cyclist myself, so I know how it feels.' Van Rijn is a member of the racing and touring club Swift, based in Leiden, which, together with Rabobank Leiden-Katwijk, is responsible for organising the final.

The milk is collected from farmers in the morning and evening by what are known as ‘collectors’, who then deliver the milk to the cooperative. There is a constant movement of cars and mopeds on the Andini Luhur grounds that are there to deliver and collect milk churns. These churns and barrels are cleaned thoroughly after the product is delivered.

Due to poor storage facilities, inefficient logistics and outdated trucks, food waste has been a long-term problem in India. In the hot and humid Indian climate, vast amounts of food spoil along the way from grower to consumer. "By some estimates there are as many refrigerated trucks in the state of Massachusetts as there are in all of India," says Naren Tallapragada, an American PhD candidate in Systems Biology at Harvard University. As a son of Indian immigrants he's regularly visited his parents' homeland, and has witnessed food waste with his own eyes. "In India the rich and the poor live right next to each other, so everyone has seen piles of food waste."

In another three years, thus, the European legal highway should be a reality. At least this is the ambition set out by the ‘Declaration’. “The year 2019 isn’t so far off anymore”, said Schultz. “Look, for example, at the test conducted in Wageningen with the We-Pod [an unmanned, self-driving vehicle that travels on public roads along with other traffic, ed.] and tests in the US with the next generation of self-driving functions.” The car industry is now introducing the first partially self-driving cars onto the market. Field testing has also demonstrated that passenger cars and lorries can communicate with each other. Car manufacturers also appear ready to move on to automated driving But will political authorities really be allowing cars to communicate with roads and their traffic control systems throughout Europe in another three years? “We - the government - don’t make smart cars ourselves”, riposted Schultz. “But what we are doing is facilitating this development. We’ve adapted legislation, and tests with self-driving vehicles, including platooning trucks, have already been made possible throughout the Netherlands. Manufacturers also have to invest in continued development, including the field of intercommunicating vehicles. This is an area in which we can support each other In the coming year, for example, traffic lights from various suppliers will start communicating with a range of vehicles as part of the ‘Optimising Use’ programme that we’re conducting in twelve regions in our country. These kinds of tests have already proven successful in Berlin. So the future isn’t far off anymore.”

Sidcon devised an underground compression container for collecting plastic packaging that can process ten times as much waste as an ordinary container of the same size. The challenge faced in collecting plastic waste is that it has so much volume, as it consists mainly of plastic bottles and flasks. Sidcon’s underground system compresses the waste to one tenth of its original size. This means that waste collection trucks have to travel less frequently to empty them, which significantly cuts CO2 emissions. Sidcon supplies the containers to dozens of municipalities in the Netherlands.

Following on from her visit to the dairy cooperative, Wendy travels on to Central Java. On her way to visit the savings and credit cooperative CU Lentera Usaha she passes by fields of chilli peppers, tomatoes, cabbages, aubergines and pulses. Together with her interpreter she arrives in the little village of Sobahan, some two and a half hours’ drive from Yogyakarta. Here she meets the board of Koperasi Kredit Lentera Usaha, which has been working together with Rabobank Foundation for around a year and a half. “They tell me that the cooperative’s financial position has improved strongly thanks to the Foundation’s help,” says Wendy. “Thanks to the working capital farmers are able to take out a loan to work their fields and to buy seeds. The cooperative also aims to teach the farmers more about agricultural techniques. Knowledge transfer from the Netherlands plays an important role in this.”
