Chingiz Babayev’s four large-scale sculptures have been specially commissioned for the fair. Made out of wax, the sculptures are improvised, with elements that resemble knuckles and fingers. The artist was trained in Socialist Realism during the Soviet era and he sees the hand as a symbolic subject; it is a reference to the ‘manual’ labourer repeatedly depicted in art of that period. By deconstructing the hand’s elements the artist addresses its past symbolism. Chingiz Babayev is a multi-disciplinary artist, working in sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, video and performance. He represented his country at the Azerbaijan Pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2007 and 2013. In 2013 he was commissioned by YARAT (YAY’s founding, not-for-profit organisation) to create a public art project for the 2nd Baku Public Art Festival.

Margret Eicher's media-tapestries are high-tech industrial products and inexpensive handiwork. In Flanders, the birthplace of court tapestries, the textile industry is very active manufacturing copies of old images to sell as souvenirs on the international market. The artist deliberately chooses to replace traditional and expensive tapestries because this falsification of traditions is an example of amusements typical of our time, based on the collective use of intellectual property.

In 2007 Faig Ahmed started a series of works that deconstruct the traditional patterns and designs of hand-woven Middle Eastern carpets - the symbol of his local tradition - transforming them into a striking visual feat. Looking at the work ‘Oiling’ as an example, we see a traditional Azerbaijani carpet, which, half-way down, mutates into a cascade of seemingly liquid colour, as if the carpet’s threads had metamorphosed into streams of multi-coloured paint. A compelling visual illusion: like the top half, the lower part is still a wool carpet made with natural colours.

Faig Ahmed stretches traditional threads farther in his continued reinvention of the conventional Middle-Eastern carpet. The artist uses the most basic component of a deconstructed rug, woolen threads and arabesque patterns, to elasticize our perception of the cultural icon. At his upcoming solo exhibition entitled Fluid Forms, the Azerbaijani artist and nominee for Victoria and Albert Museum’s Third Jameel Prize, will unveil new bodies of work created during his residency with Cuadro Gallery earlier this year.

Since the beginning of his career in Belgrade in the mid-1990s, Dejan Kaludjerović has been exploring the conjunction between consumerism and childhood, analyzing identity formation and the stability of representational forms. Most of his paintings, drawings, objects, videos and installations employ the processes of recycling, copying and reenacting, thus creating patterns that simulate mechanical reproduction, and criticize homogeneity embedded in popular culture. As time passes, the Afghan refugees, too, have become indifferent to outside events, losing their sense of self as their country faces destruction and they are unable to return. Unfortunately, this lethargy is also present in people who manage to overcome the worst situations. Their journey from darkness can lead them back to darkness. Hazare’s exhibition Anesthesia makes reference to this cyclical journey, where muted pain resonates with quiet echo.

The absence of basic rights in their new country and the disintegration of the family can create chaos for those individuals. Margret Eicher is a German conceptual artist specializing in tapestry. Margret is famous for her enormous tapestries, in which she combines baroque imagery with well-known and familiar images of our information society. The central motifs of her tapestries relate to current images of photojournalism and advertising from print and digital media. The icons of our modern information society are reproduced in a conceptually well-founded piracy of images, taken from a wide range of sources. Her art is its own kind of symbiosis, a synthesis and a blend of classical traditions and modernity. This quality makes her tapestries extremely relevant today.

YARAT Artists Studios are situated in a newly restored four-storey building where Aida Mahmudova, Orkhan Huseynov, Farid Rasulov, Faig Ahmed, Ramal Kazimov, Vusal Rahim, Farkhad Farzaliyev, Nazrin Mammadova, Reza Hazare, Rashad Alakbarov and Niyaz Najafov are creating their latest work. These traditional patterns - motivus means «what moves» in Latin - are the signs of a changing country: a region of Soviet Union dissolved, torn between tradition and modernity, East and West. This work backs on a conceptual nakedness, yet neither rational nor useful. The total composition ornament multiplies the signs of an ancient tradition to transform the meaning and destination. The space becomes an extreme variation of the present staked by an ancestral material composition, which is at the same time useful and symbolic. The meaning escapes by the multiplicity and operates a cultural transfer: the extent of weaving causes alienation of the meaning. The sensory experience plunges the viewer into a particular universe, which still remains to be discovered.

The artist was trained in Socialist Realism during the Soviet era and he sees the hand as a symbolic subject; it is a reference to the ‘manual’ labourer repeatedly depicted in art of that period. By deconstructing the hand’s elements the artist addresses its past symbolism. Chingiz Babayev is a multi-disciplinary artist, working in sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, video and performance. He represented his country at the Azerbaijan Pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2007 and 2013. In 2013 he was commissioned by YARAT (YAY’s founding, not-for-profit organisation) to create a public art project for the 2nd Baku Public Art Festival.
