In the northeastern part of Lens 257, five (5) oriented holes were drilled from drill wedges and of them have intersected Lens 257. In this area, holes CN‑14‑303W1, CN‑14‑303W2 and CN‑14‑303W3 also intersected a parallel mineralized zone located about 100 metres above Lens 257. This parallel zone, which could correspond to Lens 08, returned values of 5.07% Zn, 1.20% Cu and 32.10 g/t Ag over 1 metre in hole CN‑14‑303W1 ; 4.32% Zn, 1.20% Cu, 1.20% Pb and 118.76 g/t Ag over 1.7 metres in hole CN‑14‑303W2 ; and 4.75% Zn, 1.23% Cu and 21.08 g/t Ag over 2.5 metres in hole CN‑14‑303W3.

The best results for lumber with initial moisture content below 20% were found when employing typical industrial schedules and processing (planing) 24 hours after drying. For lumber with initial moisture content ranging from 20% to 30%, the best results were found when the lumber was air-dried for one week, followed by typical heat-treatment schedules and planing one week after drying. The best results for lumber with initial moisture content greater than 30%, were obtained for lumber dried according to typical industrial schedules and planed one week after drying. These results will allow sawmills to target different strategies for moisture sorted post-MPB wood.

Holding live unfed snow crab would extend the period of availability beyond the fishing season. This report reviews our knowledge of the biological requirements of snow crabs and suggests handling and transport procedures as well as live-holding techniques. Snow crab survival in holding facilities depends on careful handling on boats and during transportation. Crabs should never be exposed to water temperatures over 10 °C or to salinities below 22 ppt. Live-holding can be carried out at sea using modified fishing gears, higher survival rates being obtained in deep cold water with high salinity. In land-based facilities, excellent results have been obtained for a 3,5 month period at 0 °C. Under these conditions, quality of flesh is high and mortality rates are low. There is a need for information on optimal holding densities and on tolerance to metabolic wastes and low dissolved oxygen concentrations. To make for this lack of knowledge, we review current practices in lobster holding facilities.

Graphene, one of the most popular allotropes of carbon, has sparked broad interest in the field of material science since it was first isolated in 2004 by Professors Geim and Novoselov (University of Manchester). Currently, the synthesis of large-scale graphene on copper surfaces by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is being explored by the scientific community. Despite considerable efforts, CVD graphene in different growth conditions exhibits various morphologies such as the presence of hillocks, defects, grain boundaries and multilayer island formation, effects which researchers are attempting to mitigate. But to be able to exhaustively study the composition of these samples, hyperspectral Raman imaging was required, and was carried out on CVD monolayer graphene with bilayer islands. Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive analysis method that provides microscopic structural information by comparing a sample’s spectrum with reference spectra. Here, we present selected results from Prof. Martel’s group at Université de Montréal obtained during the investigation of the formation of graphene multilayer islands during Chemical Vapor Deposition growth with methane as feedstock. Known Raman signatures of the different configurations of graphene were used in this study to map the number of layers of the samples.

In this study, field trials were conducted in Prince Edward Island, Canada for three years to evaluate the efficacy of a phosphorous acid-based fungicide for the suppression of foliar late blight. Leaves from each treatment were detached from plants in early August of each year and were manually inoculated with a sporangial suspension of a local US-8 (A2) strain of P. infestans. Analysis of disease severity showed that the treatments had a significant effect on disease development and the treatment effect interacted with incubation time and cultivar type. In all three years, the combined treatment of phosphorous acid with chlorothalonil provided the best disease suppression, followed by treatment with chlorothalonil alone. Phosphorous acid alone provided increased protection to the leaves, but the effect was not as marked as the chlorothalonil alone or combination treatments. When late blight was detected in the field in 2008 and 2009, disease severity in the field was also evaluated. The results of field ratings matched the findings of the detached leaf experiments. The outcome demonstrated the value of detached leaf study as a reasonable replacement for field trials with late blight. Phosphorous acid-based fungicides appear to provide benefit in a foliar program for late blight control, particularly when combined with the regular application of a protectant fungicide. Phosphorous acid also has an excellent environmental profile, so that its usage will reduce the environmental impact of pesticides applied to the potato crop.

Boiling bones with adhering meat is a common processing technique utilized by contemporary and prehistoric human populations. Although most scholars agree that this is a time-intensive process, little quantitative data exists on the time or effort involved or the amounts and types of nutrients that can be extracted by this technique. This paper presents data on the efficiency of boiling animal bones in relationship to processing carcasses without the aid of fire. These data are the results of recent butchering experiments involving impala, wildebeest, and zebra carcasses. Carcasses of some medium-sized taxa can be quickly butchered and almost completely processed without the aid of fire. Boiling bones is very time consuming but aids in the removal of bone grease and improves the quality of lean meat. Given these results, we question how often pre-fire hominids would transport the bones of medium and larger-sized prey for culinary purposes. We also suggest that boiling should be adopted as a bone processing technique as soon as the use of fire emerges and may be reflected by specific types of bone damage patterns.
