Het is de eerste vermelding van een lange reeks Griepen die in Klein Silkow en de dorpen in de omgeving wonen. Of ze daar altijd hebben gewoond of van elders kwamen is nog niet duidelijk. In familiekring is wel sprake van een Scandinavische herkomst.

In 1703, the 13 year old Sophie and Martin Griep are registered in the churchbook of Quackenburg as 'Konfirmanden'. They are the first of many persons with the surname Griep, that lived at Klein Silkow and the villages around. Whether they originated there, or they came from elswhere is not clear yet. Whithin the family, there is an old story about a Scandinavian origin.

Hun herkomst is niet duidelijk, maar speculaties zijn er genoeg: oorspronkelijke Slavische bewoners, Vlaamse kolonisten uit de 12e eeuw, Nederlanders die naar hier kwamen toen er in de 16e eeuw zulke intensieve scheepvaartcontacten waren? In de familie zelf doet ook het verhaal over een Scandinavische herkomst de ronde.

In German times a lot of Griep's were living in Pomerania. It is not clear yet where they originated from. Speculations vary: original Slavic inhabitants, Flemish colonists from the 12th century, Dutch seamen that came to the region in the 16th century as a result of the intens trade contacts of those years? There are also old stories in the family about a Scandinavian origin.
