In addition, special ‘catch-up’ school modules were devised for Romanian, mathematics, and English. These and other measures were taken to prevent early school-leaving and reduce disparities between Roma and non-Roma children; and also to increase awareness of this phenomenon among public authorities.

In the town of Baarn in the Netherlands, the local ‘Playbox’ theatre is taking steps to preserve its particular artistic identity while lowering its costs in difficult times. Together with several small theatres in other towns, and helped by a specialised consultant, the Playbox is using ESF funding to investigate whether sharing certain non-core resources – such as some technical services, accounting, catering and marketing – would help the theatres reduce their costs and fare better in lean times. The aim is to preserve the valued individual and local character of each theatre – popular with theatre audiences and school and amateur theatre groups –by preserving buildings and artists while, at the same time, lowering costs.

Together with several small theatres in other towns, and helped by a specialised consultant, the Playbox is using ESF funding to investigate whether sharing certain non-core resources – such as some technical services, accounting, catering and marketing – would help the theatres reduce their costs and fare better in lean times.
In Lithuania, an ESF co-funded initiative to reduce youth unemployment was launched by the government in August. To address the 30% unemployment rate among the young, the €5.8 million initiative involves giving grants to employers to cover 50% of wage and social insurance costs for employees under 29 years old. Aimed at young people with little work experience or who are suffering long-term unemployment, the initiative will support 5000 jobs. Launching the project, government minister Donatas Jankauskas said: “Reducing youth unemployment is now the priority”. A similar, earlier scheme saw 80% of the young participants acquire permanent jobs, so the new initiative is expected to make a real impact on youth unemployment.
