Ogni stazione base definisce una propria cella radio che può avere un diametro di soli 100 metri in città e fino ad alcuni chilometri nelle aree rurali. Tutte le celle disposte a nido d'ape, una accanto all'atra, formano la rete di comunicazione mobile.

Each base station can only exchange a limited number of signals. At locations with high volumes of voice and data traffic, the antennae have to be fairly close to each other and the network should be of smaller cells. Capacities required at a particular location may also affect the technology that is used (GSM, UMTS, LTE).

Jede Basisstation kann nur eine limitierte Menge von Signalen austauschen. An Orten mit hohem Gesprächs- und Datenverkehr müssen die Antennen entsprechend nahe beisammen stehen und die Netze umso kleinzelliger angelegt werden. Die an einem Standort benötigen Kapazitäten können aber auch einen Einfluss auf die dort jeweils eingesetzte Technologie (GSM, UMTS, LTE) haben.
