As women who are members of peacekeeping forces and civilian female professionals they shared their experiences of working in peacekeeping operations. They highlighted the gender dynamics within the peacekeeping forces as well as cooperation with the local population. The discussion touched on a variety of prejudices, diverse perceptions of sex in cooperation with peacekeepers from different countries, preparation for peacekeeping operations and practical field experience. The round table was followed by questions from the audience.

I have much to celebrate on International Women’s Day. In my lifetime, I have seen unimaginable change, in my own country and around the world. I have seen the power of ordinary people who have stood up against the injustices they faced and who have triumphed against all odds. As a woman of color raised in poverty, I have experienced gender, race and class discrimination. Today, I am celebrating the power of women, the power to overcome the particular vulnerabilities resulting from these multiple forms of discrimination.

One key lesson of the past decade-and-a-half is the importance of addressing broader discrimination and injustice. Gender stereotyping and discrimination remain common in all cultures and communities. Early and forced marriage, so-called ‘honour killing’, sexual abuse and trafficking of young women and girls are disturbingly prevalent and, in some areas, on the rise. Whether looking through the lens of poverty, or in times of disaster, we see that women still bear the greatest burden.

VIENNA, 8 March (UN Information Service) - Twenty years ago, when the world convened a landmark conference on women's human rights, the devastating conflict in the former Yugoslavia prompted deserved attention to rape and other war crimes there against civilians. Two decades later, with girls as young as seven not only targeted but used as weapons by violent extremists, it would be easy to lose heart about the value of international gatherings. But while we have a long way to go to achieve full equality - with ending gender-based violence a central goal - progress over the past two decades has proven the enduring value of the 1995 Beijing Conference on Women.

Decriminalizing homosexuality is an essential first step towards establishing genuine equality before the law. But real, lasting progress cannot be achieved by changing laws alone. We must change minds as well. Like racism and misogyny, homophobia is prejudice born of ignorance. And like other forms of prejudice, the most effective long-term response is information and education. Over the past half century, we have seen a marked shift in public attitudes in almost all societies towards race, gender and disability. The challenge, for all those who believe in human rights and non-discrimination, is to encourage a similar shift in public attitudes towards those whose sexual orientation or gender identity differs from that of the majority in society.
