Moderator Martin Jähn, board member of the LiSoG Association, pointed out that intelligent people need intelligent solutions. Gerd Jan Tschöpe from Tarent PLC was of the opinion that the boundaries between work- and private life will dissolve soon. Tschöpe: “We need creative problem solvers”. Peter Ganten, CEO of Univention, pointed out the significant changes everybody expected at the workplace due to Cloud Computing. “You will ask yourself why you should even go to the travel agent, as you can research everything online. The computer will tell us which one the apparent best solution is. However, we will always depend on what the computer or cloud tells us and not what the market actually gives”. Ganten: “That is what I call flat-screen-advice”.

A total of 43 companies and 75 independent projects are displaying new hardware and software solutions as well as innovative services. Open source software has become firmly established. Well-known companies such as Mozilla, Google, Tarent, Astaro, IBM and Microsoft are exhibiting at LinuxTag. Exhibits on display by independent projects include OpenStreetMap, currently being used as a navigation system by the Brandenburg police forces, data protection projects, and free multimedia applications for the home cinema.

For the central service of the police Brandenburg the tarent solutions PLC has developed the key components of an “interactive police patrol car”. The name of the, fully with Open Source components developed, project: police, automobile-based, resource-controlling IT-system, short PolarIS. Advantages: the work with the permanently increasing electronic components in the police patrol car is becoming a lot easier, the police officer greatly relieved and the safety of operations increased significantly. All functions are accessed via a touch-sensitive screen. PolarIS also serves the coordination of operations, the provision of location information for the emergency vehicles and the virtualization of geographical locations of all police patrol cars. Technically, the system consists of central service systems in the control centre, as well as the small computers installed in the emergency vehicles
