Er stirbt nicht, weil er dem Gegner unterlegen ist, sondern weil ihm seine Fylgja, nun als Walküre, als Wodens Schlacht-Erwählerin sichtbar wird, den Erwählten durch ihren furchterregenden Anblick lähmt und dem Gegner so die Möglichkeit gibt, ihn zu töten.

The hero may now enjoy the peak of power and glory, but there is a price to pay or goal to gain, depending on the point of view. If he does not want to enter Hel instead of Valhalla, he must die a warrior’s death. In battle, not in bed. It is not the enemy, who defeats him, however, but his own Fylgja, now his Valkyrie (battle chooser), who – visible to our hero for the first time – she paralyses him by her terrifying appearance, so that the adversary has the better of him.
