Begründet wird die Maßnahme mit „neuen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen“, dass der Anbau von MON810-Mais eine Gefahr für die Umwelt darstelle.

What triggered heated public discussion was the explanation given for the measures. In its explanatory statement, the BVL cited “new and additional scientific findings” that “provide justified grounds for assuming that the cultivation of MON810 represents a danger to the environment.” A large number of scientific studies are listed to justify this claim. The response was immediate.

Doch da die „Ursachen für diese Schwankungen nicht klar definiert werden können“, leitet Greenpeace aus seinen Untersuchungen die Forderung ab, „den Anbau der Pflanzen zu untersagen“.

Greenpeace presented the results publicly on 11 May 2007. They claim that the Bt content varies by a factor of as much as a 100 between individual plants. Although even Greenpeace had to admit that the levels of Bt in the leaves were “surprisingly low” and considerably lower than the value given by Monsanto in the approval documentation. But since the “reasons for such differences and the range of variation cannot be identified”, Greenpeace concludes from its research that “the commercial cultivation of the crops should be stopped.”
