In an environment marked by excess production capacity of steel in the world and by low industrial Brazilian growth, Julian stated the relevance of innovation for competitiveness. “We must diversify and integrate the research matrix, valuing innovation in production chains. Brazil is strong in the area of biological sciences, but still lacking in engineering and technology, pillars of the economic growth”, he said. Therefore, Usiminas has invested more in the technological content of its steel, as a strategy of differentiation. Julian said that the company has concluded in 2012 a series of investments in the Plant of Ipatinga which amount to R$ 5 billion, as the new line of galvanized, coke plant 3 and the CLC steel line. “At this time, the focus is to stabilize and use the investments that have been made”, he pointed out.
