Vieille de plus de 800 ans, la vieille ville de Lijiang a été fondée à l'époque de la dynastie Song. Abritant trois sites classés au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO (les trois rivières parallèles, la mémoire du monde et les textes sacrés Dongba), la vieille ville de Lijiang regorge de cours d'eau et de canaux, ce qui lui vaut le surnom de Venise de l'Orient.

Die von zahlreichen Wasserwegen und Kanälen durchzogene Altstadt von Lijiang mit Ihren drei UNESCO-Welterbestätten – den drei parallelen Flüssen, dem Weltdokumentenerbe (Memory of the World) und den Dongba-Schriften – ist ein Ort, an dem sich Flüssen gleich eine Vielzahl bedeutender Wege menschlicher Geschichte kreuzen. Aus diesem Grund wird die Stadt auch als das Venedig Ostasiens bezeichnet.
