Five years after beginning construction work, Eduardo Souto de Moura has finished the new cultural center of Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal, its industrial aesthetic recalling that of the old Gil Eannes Hospital Ship, which is anchored in the city’s port and used as a museum. Rising beside a library by Álvaro Siza and a leisure center by Fernando Tavora, in a privileged neighborhood on the banks of the Miño River, the project seeks to contribute to a new cultural hub for the Alto Minho region. With capacity for 4,000 people, the building will accommodate cultural, musical, sporting and recreational events in 3,792 square meters distributed in three stories.
