Der Ursprung des Simmentaler Fleckviehs liegt im benachbarten Simmental. 1890 haben zehn Viehzuchtgenossenschaften den "Schweizerischen Fleckviehzuchtverband" gegründet. Heute gehören die Simmentaler mit über 40 Millionen Stück zu den meist verbreiteten Rinderrassen weltweit.

The Simmental originates from the neighbouring Simmental valley. Ten cattle-breeding co-operatives founded the "Swiss Simmental Association" in 1890. Today the Simmental is one of the most widespread cattle breeds in the world, with over 40 million head. Beef producers on all five continents have been very successful rearing Simmental cattle. In Switzerland the Simmental is breed mainly for its milk.

La race tachetée du Simmental est originaire de la vallée de la Simme voisine. En 1890, dix fédérations d’élevage en fondé la « Fédération suisse de la race tachetée rouge ». De nos jours, avec plus de 40 millions de têtes, c’est la race bovine la plus répandue au monde. Des producteurs de viande des cinq continents l’élèvent avec succès. En Suisse, on l’élève essentiellement pour son lait, car c’est une excellente productrice.
