Al contrario, si cerca di favorirne la conservazione procurandosi alloccorrenza polloni e alberi nuovi. Attualmente, al Ballenberg si conta una cinquantina di specie di alberi da frutto. Anche la vigna viene lavorata nel rispetto dellepoca e dei metodi applicati nellarea di provenienza.

The cultivated fields belonging to a group of buildings are no longer worked with the old wooden ploughs as these implements are too valuable to be used today. The corn is cut by hand using a scythe, loaded onto the cart with a pitchfork and later threshed with a flail on the barn floor. Old varieties of fruit trees, which no longer produce much fruit, are left standing. It is our aim to cultivate or to plant new ones, if there are enough such saplings or trees available. At present, there are nearly fifty different varieties of fruit trees in the Museum. Of course, the existing vineyards are also tended according to the traditional and standard practice in their native region.

Le musée ne dépend pas dune exploitation intensive et rentable du sol. Limportant est deffectuer un travail extensif. Certes, les champs ne sont plus labourés avec les anciennes charrues en bois, ces outils étant trop précieux; mais les céréales sont encore moissonnées à la faux, chargées sur le char à la fourche et le grain est battu au fléau. Les arbres fruitiers qui ne portent que peu de fruits sont conservés lorsquils appartiennent à une vieille espèce. Il est souhaitable de cultiver ces espèces ou de les replanter, afin de pouvoir obtenir les pousses ou les arbres correspondants. A ce jour, près de cinquante sortes darbres fruitiers poussent au musée. De même, les vignes sont soignées et cultivées à la manière dantan, selon leur région dorigine.

Die zu einer Baugruppe passenden bepflanzten Äcker werden zwar nicht mehr mit den alten hölzernen Pflügen befahren, diese Objekte sind zu wertvoll, um noch benützt zu werden. Das Getreide wird zur Reifzeit aber noch von Hand mit der Sense geschnitten, mit der Gabel auf den Wagen geladen und später in der Tenne mit dem Flegel gedroschen. Obstbäume, die nicht viele Früchte tragen, aber einer alten Sorte angehören, lässt man stehen. Es ist auch erwünscht, solche Sorten rückzuzüchten oder erneut anzupflanzen, wenn man entsprechende Schösslinge oder Bäume erhält. Gegenwärtig gibt es im Museum fast fünfzig verschiedene Sorten von Obstbäumen. Selbstverständlich werden auch die vorhandenen Rebberge nach alter und in der Herkunftsregion üblicher Art betreut.
