Les nouveaux résultats n’indiquent pas uniquement une voie d’apparition de nouvelles espèces, ils livrent aussi une explication plausible pour l’effondrement de la biodiversité piscicole que connait le lac Victoria depuis 25 ans. La surfertilisation du lac causée par l’activité agricole, la déforestation et les rejets des grandes villes environnantes a en effet contribué à un fort accroissement de la turbidité de l’eau. L’atténuation de la lumière incidente est depuis lors très rapide, la profondeur éclairée n’étant plus que de quelques mètres. Le rapprochement des différentes niches écologiques est alors tel que le mécanisme d’adaptation ne peut plus intervenir. Les auteurs ont ainsi constaté que les zones à forte turbidité n’abritaient plus deux espèces, bleue et rouge, distinctes mais au contraire une forme mixte unique ne présentant d’adaptation spécifique à aucune niche particulière. Ce mélange des espèces entraîné par les modifications de l’environnement aquatique a très certainement contribué au fait que sur les plus de 500 espèces de cichlidés que comptait le lac Victoria il y a à peine quelques générations, seules 250 subsistent actuellement.

"'Darwin's nightmare' is part of the new genre of films hitting cinemas which embrace current events and information, probe politics and the global economy, and minutely analyse the powers that be. ... Their authors claim to be journalists using different tools, in the sense that they undertake pointed investigations in defense of an openly acknowledged point of view. But we are easily able to perceive the ambiguity of such subjects on the movie screen."
