Pukaskwa's caribou are such a mysterious and exotic presence that Heron Promaine admits to not having seen one during her first several years at the park. "I always told visitors that they were unlikely to see one, but that if they did, it would be way down in the southern part of the park, a long way from the campgrounds at the north end. Back in Great Britain, rumours concerning Franklin’s condition and whereabouts came from many sources. Newspapers were overwhelmed with stories of people having visions of Franklin, or receiving various forms of communication from him. The vast majority of these eventually were proven to be hoaxes. The London Times reported in 1851 that a woman saw a gas-filled communication balloon landing in her garden. At the time, the government did issue balloons as a way to relay messages across great distances by attaching small note cards. This particular balloon bore a card with an inscription disclosing the coordinates of Franklin and his crewmembers. Because these balloons were difficult to acquire, this message appeared credible and newspapers took an immediate interest. Reporters interviewed the woman, Mrs. Russell, and her servant, Edward Edmunds. Speculation about the balloon’s authenticity was debated in letters to the editor [see illustration] and subsequent developments continued to receive coverage overseas. The report was eventually discredited when authorities verified that neither Franklin nor any of the search expeditions had been issued with communications balloons.

« Cela doit bien faire 10 ou 15 ans que j'ai vu un blaireau, raconte Helen. C'était une maman blaireau qui voulait monter la colline avec ses deux petits. Elle montait le premier jusqu'en haut en le traînant par le peau du cou, mais chaque fois qu'elle redescendait chercher le deuxième, le premier la suivait jusqu'en bas. Je crois qu'elle a fini par abandonner son projet! » Bien qu'aucun blaireau n'ait été aperçu dernièrement sur le terrain d'Helen, le prochain qui s'y installera y trouvera un habitat de qualité et des quantités de spermophiles pour se nourrir.

Helen's beautiful 60 acre property is a mix of open Douglas fir forest and pasture with two ponds. It provides prime habitat for birds, elk, cougar, coyote as well as the endangered American badger. "The last badger I saw must have been about 10 or 15 years ago," says Helen, "a mother badger with two babies wanted to go up the hill so she'd take one up by the scruff of the neck, but every time she went back down the hill to get the second, the first one would follow her back down. I think she finally gave up trying to get up that hill!" While badgers haven't been seen recently on Helen's land, the next one to move in will find good habitat and lots of ground squirrels to eat.

Dr. William “Tiger” Dunlop wrote about his experiences in war, telling about his witnessing an American militia officer from Vermont who was offering to sell cattle to the British. According to Dunlop, the officer recognized that doing business with the enemy was wrong but that he did not consider any man his enemy who paid a good price for his beef.
