I mewn i’r orielau cyfoes, ac fe’m cyfarchwyd gan gasgliad o waith gan Theaster Gates sydd wedi’i ysbrydoli gan systemau credoau, gan gynnwys rhan o do eglwys, Boli Affricanaidd, gafr ddefodol saer rhydd a ffilm yn cynnwys cerddoriaeth Gospel.
Into the contemporary galleries and I was greeted by Theaster Gates belief-system inspired collection of works, including a section of a church roof, an African Boli, a freemasons ritual goat and a film featuring Gospel music. As a Christian I was moved by the mood of the film but wished the noise from the mechanised goat on a rail track, hadn’t drowned it out.

Yn ei waith diweddar, Cosmic Orphans (2006), gosodiad penodol ar gyfer safle teml Sri Krishnan a grewyd ar gyfer Biennale Singapore, gorchuddiodd Harsha y nenfwd cyfan uwchben y sanctwm mewnol a’r llawr o amgylch twr y teml gyda muriau o ffigyrau’n cysgu.
(2006) a site-specific painting installation at the Sri Krishnan Temple created for the Singapore Biennale, Harsha covered the entire surface of the rooftop above the inner sanctum and the floor surrounding the temple’s tower with paintings of sleeping figures. Painted directly onto the floor using flat colours, the figures occupy a space not normally associated with traditional painting – their displacement provoking the audience to consider what is permitted and forbidden in relation to where they tread in the temple.

Symudais i oriel Renzo Martens â’i hoglau siocled a oedd, fel ei waith yn Chapter, yn trafod Cyfalafiaeth, tlodi, adnoddau a chelf yn Affrica. Yn fwriadol amwys a chyfwynebiadol, doeddwn i ddim yn siŵr a oedd Renzo wrthi’n ddiddig yn cydweithio â Chyfalafiaeth, neu a oedd yn ffafrio ei diddymu a pham roedd o mor fodlon stumio’r cyfryngau ac yntau’n tynnu sylw at gamddefnydd o’r un peth.
I moved into the Renzo Martens chocolate scented gallery, which as his work at Chapter, discussed Capitalism, poverty, resources and art in Africa. Deliberately ambiguous and confrontational I wasn’t sure whether Renzo was happily working with Capitalism, or favoured its destruction and why he was gladly using media manipulation whilst he drew attention to this misuse of the same thing. His use of Congo materials, artists and faces (on sale and well priced at £39.99) transformed the smell and sight of this Welsh gallery.

Mae gwaith John Akomfrah yn aml yn edrych ar bobloedd alltud ar draws y byd, hanes, y cof, gwladychiaeth a’i chynhysgaeth drwy gyfryngau seiliedig ar y lens. Mae’r ystod o ffilmiau sgrin unigol a lluosog yn gadael i ni ailystyried y ffyrdd yr ydym yn meddwl am hanesion personol ac ar y cyd, naratifau mawr ein hoes, ar draws cenedl-wladwriaethau a chyfandiroedd.
John Akomfrah’s work often explores the global diaspora, history, memory, colonialism and its legacy through lens-based media. The range of single and multiscreen films allows us to reconsider the ways in which we think about both personal and collective histories, the grand narratives of our times, across nation states and continents. His work has often given voice to underrepresented communities and their universal stories told through the creation of sublime imagery, and evocative and immersive soundtracks.

Mae’r prosiect wedi sefydlu ei bencadlys mewn hen ysgol fabanod yn y gymuned a ailagorwyd i’r cyhoedd gan y prosiect y llynedd. Wedi’i hysgogi gan waith cymdeithasol ymgysylltiedig yr artist Owen Griffiths, mae’r ysgol bellach yn cynnal sesiynau wythnosol gydag artistiaid, cydweithwyr ac athrawon.
The project has set up base in a disused infants’ school in the community, which was re-opened to the public by the project last year. Driven by the socially engaged practice of the artist Owen Griffiths, the school now runs weekly sessions with artists, collaborators and teachers. Described as a space for social learning, the school’s curriculum and activities explore making, skill sharing, art production, food and meals. It promotes engagement around land, play, ownership and collaboration, whilst establishing a long-term relationship with the community. This is creating a genuine collaboration (between community, artists and partners) and authoring sustainable opportunities for change.

Mae’n arbrofi gyda’r prosesau hyn ac yn chwarae gyda nhw, gan fanteisio ar yr alcemi sy’n gynhenid i ffotograffiaeth gemegol neu newid yr elfennau amseru sy’n peri mai cyfrwng y symudol yw ffilm. Ceir synnwyr o eironi y tu ôl i’w waith – bod artist o Daiwan yn dwli ar ddulliau mor draddodiadol o greu delweddau.
He experiments with and manipulates these processes, exploiting the alchemy inherent in chemical photography or changing the elements of timing which makes film the medium of movement. There is a sense of irony behind his work – that a Taiwanese artist should be preoccupied by such traditional methods of creating images. Living in a highly sophisticated technological world, Wu Chi-Tsung takes delight in almost accidentally finding ways to capture or re-imagine the world around him. All his works, whether presented as still or moving images, use time as an integral part of their make-up, not simply through the convention of a shutter opening and closing but through the subversion of time in how the images were made.
  Artes Mundi - Fernando ...
Yng ngeiriau García-Dory: “Mae’r weithred o atgynhyrchu gwaith blaenorol sy’n bod yn barod yn ddatganaid ynddo’i hun, yn rhoi’r gorau i feirniadaeth a chanolbwyntio sylw ar waith artist arall. Mae gweledigaeth dwfn a byd dychmygol Kraguly yn troi’n gyfrwng i mi feithrin myfyrdod, astudrwydd ac empathi. Trwy gael gwared o’m holl syniadau a chefnu ar y galw i greu ffurf newydd, gall yr artist sy’n ail-greu ganolbwyntio ar y weithred awtomatig ei hun. I mi mae’n gyfle gwych i archwilio’r syniad o’r math o artist yw Kraguly – yn ymroddedig i arbrofi gyda deunyddiau a ffurfiau ail-adroddus – ac hefyd i bonito gyda syniadaeth arall, fod celf yn fodd i gysyniadau neu gymell syniad, gan adlewyrchu ar ieithwedd celf ei hun. Mae’r darnau wedi’u hail-greu, neu, y defnydd o gelfyddyd a strategaethau diwylliannol megis yr amgueddfa laeth a’i raglen gyhoeddus, i fod yn fodd i ysgogi grŵp cymdeithasol penodol a hyrwyddo newid. Gall yr ymwelydd i’r stafelloedd hyn ddilyn llinell di- doredig, lle mae awdur y gwaith yn aneglur; gan adolygu’r ffyrdd mae celf gyfoes yn cael ei wneud a’i brofi.”
In García-Dory’s words: “The action of reproducing previous existing work is a statement in itself, abandoning all judgment and just concentrating the attention on another artist’s work. The deep vision and imaginary work of Kraguly then becomes a vehicle for me to enter into a state of contemplation, attentiveness and empathy. Emptying oneself and abandoning the demand of giving birth to new form, the re-enacting artist can therefore concentrate on the automatic action itself. For me it’s a great chance to explore that inherited notion of an artist that Kraguly follows – dedicated to experiment with materials and recurrent forms – and also, to bridge the other notions, art as a way to conceptualise or induce an idea, reflecting on the language of art itself. The re-enacted pieces, or, the use of art and cultural strategies such as the dairy museum and its public programme, can be a way to activate a certain social group and promote change. The visitor going through these rooms can follow a discontinuous line, in which authorship is blurred; revising ways contemporary art is made and experienced.”

Futurefarmers is a group of art and farming practitioners founded in 1995 by California-based artist Amy Franceschini.  A consistent line through Franceschini’s work reveals sustained questioning about how “nature” and “culture” are perceived. She uses various modes to uncover histories and currents related to this divide by challenging systems of exchange and tools used to “hunt” and “gather.” Her work manifests as temporary public art, museum exhibitions, publications, bus tours, public programs and most recently permanent public art.  Her work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Whitney Biennial in New York, New York Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Venice Architectural Biennale and she is the recipient of a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2006 Eureka Fellowship.

Karen Mackinnon, Artes Mundi Director has said, “We are delighted to announce John Akomfrah as the winner of the seventh biennial Artes Mundi Prize.  Artes Mundi champions leading contemporary artists, from across the world, whose work relates to every aspect of our personal lives in a global society. Artes Mundi’s focus on the human condition finds a unique resonance in these uncertain times. We want to thank our panel of judges for their sensitivity, thoroughness and intellectual rigour in selecting the winner.  The judges felt that all the shortlisted artists showed outstanding work.  However the prize is awarded not just for the work in the exhibition but for the continued excellence of their practice over the past 8 years. The Artes Mundi 7 Prize was awarded for Akomfrah’s presentation of Auto Da Fé and for a substantial body of outstanding work dealing with issues of migration, racism and religious persecution. To speak of these things in this particular moment feels more important than ever.”

Mae gwaith amlochrog Gates yn cwmpasu actifiaeth gymdeithasol, adfywio trefol a datblygu cymunedol mewn ardaloedd sy’n amddifad yn economaidd yn Ochr Ddeheuol Chicago, St Louis ac Omaha. Yn cael ei adnabod ar led fel Bachgen y Posteri am Gelf sy’n Ymgysylltiedig yn Gymdeithasol, mae gwaith Gates wedi chwyldroi celf gyfoes drwy ‘ei economi gylchol’, chwedl y New York Times, lle mae Gates yn ariannu adfywio trefol drwy werthu ei waith celf.
Gates’s multi-faceted practice encompasses social activism, urban regeneration and community development in economically-deprived areas of South Side Chicago, St Louis and Omaha. Known widely as The Poster Boy for Socially Engaged Art, Gates work has revolutionised contemporary art with what The New York Times has called his ‘circular economy’, in which Gates funds urban renewal through the sale of his artwork.

Elfen sy’n greiddiol i waith Bruguera yw awydd i gydweithio er mwyn galluogi i eraill rannu’r posibiliadau oedd o fewn ei chyrraedd hi. Yn 2003 sefydlodd ysgol gelf amgen – Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Celf Ymddygiad) – yn Havana er mwyn darparu adnoddau technolegol a deallusol nad oedd ar gael i gyw-artistiaid o Giwba yng Nghiwba cyn hynny.
At the core of Bruguera’s practice is a collaborative impulse that opens up the possibilities made available to her to be shared by others. In 2003 she founded the alternative art school Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Art of Behaviour) in Havana to channel technological and intellectual resources unavailable in Cuba to emerging Cuban artists. This has been crucial in the development of a generation of Cuban artists now starting to show internationally. From 2010-15 Bruguera is focusing on her long-term project Immigrant Movement International, based in Queens, NY, which seeks to redefine the immigrant as a global citizen and stimulate artists to create work that can be actively implemented into social, political, and scientific issues.

A short essay by the Israeli philosopher Adi Ophir underpins the exhibition endeavour. In his writing, Ophir observes that God reveals himself in the bible predominantly through acts of catastrophe, and considers the biblical text as a parable for the growth of modern governance. With this exhibition, for the first time Broomberg & Chanarin make this parable powerfully explicit.

The winner of the Artes Mundi Prize is decided by a group of independent judges. Made up of international curators, directors and critics, the judging panel comes together shortly before the prize awarding. As well as visiting the exhibition they consider each shortlisted artist’s practice over the previous 5-8 years. The judges award the prize to a single artist who, in their view, consistently makes thought provoking work of exceptional quality that fits within the criteria of the prize.

Ochr yn ochr â Trais Dwyfol arddangosir hefyd dau waith pwysig arall gan Broomberg a Chanarin, sef Bywyd Tragwyddol sy’n edrych o’r newydd ar y ffotograff dadleuol a enillodd Wobr Pulitzer 1979 ond na wyddid pwy oedd yr awdur am y 30 mlynedd canlynol; ac Y Diwrnod Na Fu Farw Unrhyw Un, sef cyfres 2008 o ffotograffau llawn symud, nad ydynt yn drosiadol, a gynhyrchwyd pan oedd Broomberg a Chanarin wedi’u gosod ar y rheng flaen gydag unedau’r Fyddin Brydeinig yn Nhalaith Helmand yn Affganistan.
Exhibited alongside Divine Violence there will be two other significant works by Broomberg & Chanarin: Afterlife, a re-reading of a controversial, Pulitzer Prize-winning 1979 photograph, whose author was anonymous for the next 30 years; and The Day Nobody Died, a 2008 series of radically non-figurative, action-photographs produced when Broomberg & Chanarin were embedded with British Army units on the front line in Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

Visitors to the exhibition at the National Museum of Art will also be invited to sign a Moral Commitment Contract promoting immigrants’ rights.

In the 1990’s he took up one of the great issues for West Africa – the encroachment of the Sahel. Since the millennium, his work depicts another – the devastating effects of AIDS on society and on individuals. His questioning of the political, social and economic scenes in contemporary Mali is evident in how AIDS, wars, ecological issues, human rights, globalisation affects all aspects of life and individuals within society. Much of his large scale work is textile-based, a medium which is more readily available than paints.

I have to admit I was a bit unsure when the publicity team for Artes Mundi asked me if I’d like to bring my family along to review this year’s exhibition. My children are fairly cultured (I hope!), but I worried whether it would be too much for them. Contemporary art has a reputation for being controversial and even some top artists think children should be banned from art galleries. Is this biennial exhibition of work from some of the world’s leading contemporary artists, and the UK’s biggest arts prize, really somewhere I want to take my almost five-year-old, three-year-old and seven-month-old?

Taking place from 6 October 2012, Artes Mundi 5 will feature the work of seven ground-breaking contemporary artists of growing international importance whose practices engage with social reality, lived experience and the human condition. The exhibition will take place at the National Museum of Art under the roof of National Museum Cardiff. For the first time Artes Mundi will also be in partnership with organisations such as Cardiff-based multidisciplinary arts centre Chapter, who will provide an additional venue for some of the works. The winner of the prize will be announced at a special award ceremony taking place on 29 November 2012 at National Museum Cardiff. With a first prize of £40,0000, Artes Mundi is the largest cash prize awarded for the arts in the UK and one of the most significant in the world. For Artes Mundi 5, each shortlisted artist will receive £4,000 and one of the artists will be selected for a solo exhibition, to be presented in 2014 in the lead up to Artes Mundi 6, at the recently refurbished Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno, Wales. This year will also welcome the inclusion of an audience choice poll for the prize, allowing the public to vote for their favourite artist and work in the exhibition. The results of the poll will be revealed at the close of the exhibition in January 2013.

I needn’t have worried. Not only does Artes Mundi welcome children, they have a whole series of workshops especially for families, with staff on hand to help young people respond creatively to what they have seen. The workshop we attended at the National Museum Cardiff today marked not only the start of the Artes Mundi exhibition, but also of The Big Draw, an annual national campaign to encourage people to take part in creative activities. Led by the lovely Sera Wyn, our task was to contribute to a collaborative art work in response to Carlos Bunga’s installation, Exodus. The Portuguese artist is famous for his large-scale site-specific works, inspired by the space in which he is working. Made from cardboard, duct tape and white paint, Exodus is certainly an impressive structure. Sera tells us it was inspired by the two giant pillars in the gallery space. Little E and Little O thought it was fantastic, like some kind of giant castle.
