At no time were King's leadership skills more apparent than when he faced the challenge of leading the country through the Second World War. Under King, Canada became a modern industrial nation in the fullest sense, making a contribution to the war effort that taxed the country's resources to the limit. Because of the scale of Canada's involvement in the war, King was able to demand a larger voice for his country in international affairs. This level of influence was particularly obvious in the growing connection between Canada and the United States, a result of the close relationship that developed between King and President Roosevelt. The issue of conscription during the First World War had divided the country and the Liberal Party. King's handling of the issue was masterly and he achieved his goal of full Canadian participation in the war effort without splitting the nation.

In XII c. those lands were conquered by the House of Hospitalers of Saint Mary of The Teutons in Jerusalem - the Teutonic Order, invited here by Polish duke - Conrad of Mazovia. This area was the object of constant wars between Poland, Lithuania and Teutonic Order (which in XVI c. became Prussians). After Second World War, under the Potsdam agreement, the land was divided between Poland and Soviet Union. After the fall of Soviet Union, Prussia is now a part of Poland, Russia (Kalinigrad province - oblast) and Lithuania.

The integration of Jews from Arab countries in Israel is a controversial story. Israel was at war, under attack from six Arab armies. The population virtually doubled within a very short period of time. Israel tried as best she could to integrate refugees. But we do have pictures and newsreel footage of Jews in refugee camps in the most squalid, unsanitary tents. There were issues relating to shortages of food. There were issues relating to disease. Israel was in the middle of a war. So there were no social service agencies waiting at the beck and call of immigrants to try to assist them.

Deshalb wurde er ständig kujoniert [1] von der konservativen Umgebung. Im Ersten Weltkrieg hat das Militär ihn mit den Füßen aufgehängt und ihn mit der Hundepeitsche geschlagen, weil er gegen den Krieg protestiert hatte. Unter dem Dollfuß-Regime in den 30er-Jahren wurden die Sozialdemokraten verfolgt. Wir mussten uns auf Hinterwegen in die Konsumbäckerei schleichen, wenn wir einkaufen wollten. Meinem Vater drohte man mit Entlassung von der Grube, wenn er sich nicht in die faschistische Heimwehr einschreiben ließe. Als er dieses verweigerte, wurde jedenfalls eine Uniform für ihn angeschafft, die er in den Kleiderschrank verschwinden ließ.

Mr. Koenigs was appointed Germany's Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office by Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer on 1 January 2005.  After years of intensive work in the sphere of human rights policy in the United Nations, he has the necessary experience for his new post.  From 2002 he headed the United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) as Special Representative of the Secretary-General.  The mission was established to monitor the peace agreement signed in 1996 between the former parties to the civil war.  Under the agreement, the specially created Truth Commission to address the human rights violations committed during the civil war played a central role.

Nach Jahren intensiver Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der Menschenrechtspolitik bei den Vereinten Nationen bringt er entsprechende Erfahrungen in die neue Aufgabe ein: Seit 2002 leitete er als Sondergesandter des UNO-Generalsekretärs die Beobachtermission der Vereinten Nationen in Guatemala (MINUGA), die zur Überwachung des 1996 unterzeichneten Friedensabkommens zwischen den vormaligen Bürgerkriegsparteien eingesetzt worden war. Im Rahmen dieses Abkommens spielte die Aufarbeitung der in den Bürgerkriegsjahren begangenen Menschenrechtsverletzungen mithilfe der hierfür geschaffenen Wahrheitskommission eine zentrale Rolle.

After the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) ended, the victors refined their ways of humiliation and punishment against Republicans and antifascist prisoners. One of the more savage and least documented strategies was the use of prisoners as slave labor. Throughout the early years of the war, under the guise of the need to rebuild the country, the Spanish State managed to use up to 400,000 political prisoners from a long list of public and private companies, as well as religious orders.
