Das ewige Tauziehen zwischen Demokraten und Republikanern ist unsinnig und pubertär, kritisiert die linksliberale Tageszeitung Der Standard: "Im Streit um das US-Budget agierten sie wie testosterongeladene Jugendliche. Sie fuhren um die Wette auf den Abgrund zu. Nach dem Motto: Wer zuerst bremst, verliert. ... Der vorläufige Kompromiss, den die Verhandler im Senat nun über Silvester vereinbart haben, wäre auch schon vor zehn Tagen zu erzielen gewesen, oder auch vor einem Monat. ... Das politische Spiel in Washington wird aber anders gespielt. Die erste Spielregel lautet: Es darf nicht zu einfach sein. Einzelne Republikaner haben zwar nach der neuerlichen Wahlniederlage gegen Barack Obama angedeutet, dass sie in den kommenden vier Jahren eine pragmatischere Rolle einnehmen werden, die Praxis zeigt aber, dass sich am Patt wenig geändert hat und ändern wird. Mangels Mehrheit im Repräsentantenhaus wird Obama auch in Zukunft keine großen Sprünge machen können. Nach dem Hickhack ist also vor dem Hickhack."

Le sempiternel bras de fer entre démocrates et républicains est absurde et puéril, critique le quotidien de centre-gauche Der Standard : "Dans le litige budgétaire américain, ils se comportent comme des adolescents gorgés de testostérone. Ils ont fait la course vers l'abîme, selon le mot d'ordre : le premier qui freine a perdu. … Le compromis sur lequel les négociateurs du Sénat se sont entendus à la Saint-Sylvestre aurait aussi été possible il y a dix jours, voire même il y a un mois. … Mais le jeu politique à Washington se déroule autrement. La première règle, c'est que rien ne doit être trop facile. Si certains républicains ont signifié après leur nouvelle défaite électorale face à Barack Obama qu'ils adopteraient une attitude plus pragmatique dans les quatre prochaines années, la pratique montre en revanche que rien n'a vraiment changé, et que rien ne changera vraiment dans le statu quo. De par l'absence de majorité favorable à la Chambre des représentants, Obama ne pourra pas non plus faire de grandes avancées à l'avenir. La fin de la dispute n'est que l'avènement de la prochaine."

The first rule is: things must not be too easy. Certainly, after the recent election defeat against Barack Obama some Republicans indicated that they would play a more pragmatic role in the next four years. However practice shows that little has changed or will change in the political stand-off. Lacking a majority in the House of Representatives, Obama will remain unable to make any significant progress in the time to come. So after the wrangling is before the wrangling."
