Gazprom and the wholly-owned BASF subsidiary Wintershall have already been active in natural gas trading in Germany and other European countries since 1990 via the German-Russian joint ventures WIEH (Wintershall Erdgashandelshaus Berlin), WIEE (Wintershall Erdgashandelshaus Zug) and WINGAS. WINGAS is one of the largest natural gas traders on the German market, and the company has also positioned itself successfully in Europe. WINGAS has been supplying customers in Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, the UK, Austria and the Czech Republic for many years – and this sector is growing. Its customers are primarily resellers (municipal utility companies, regional companies and gas wholesale companies) as well as large industrial consumers and power stations.

The natural gas trading as well as transport and storage segments of Wintershall reported good figures in 2012 and thus contributed to the company’s success. The total sales of the three joint venture companies run jointly with Gazprom, WINGAS, WIEH and WIEE, increased to 471 billion kilowatt hours (2011: 417). The contribution to EBIT from natural gas trading, transport and storage rose to 482 (2011: 425) million euros last year. Higher contributions from the transport sector, owing to the first full year of operation of the OPAL pipeline, had a significant impact on the marked increase in earnings. The earnings of the trading business remained at the level of the previous year. A lower price level and weaker sales margins will presumably lead to a decline in sales and earnings in 2013.

In return, Wintershall has transferred its share in the previously jointly operated natural gas trading and storage business to its long-term partner Gazprom. This includes the 50% participation in the gas trading companies WINGAS, WIEH (Wintershall Erdgas Handelshaus Berlin) and WIEE (Wintershall Erdgas Handelshaus Zug) including shares in astora, which operates the natural gas storage facilities in Rehden and Jemgum, Germany, as well as a share in the natural gas storage in Haidach, Austria. Gazprom also received a 50% share in the activities of Wintershall Noordzee B.V., which is active in the exploration and production of oil and gas in the southern North Sea (the Netherlands, the UK and Denmark). Together these activities contributed about €12.2 billion to sales and around €260 million to EBITDA of BASF Group in 2014 and about €7.2 billion to sales and around €240 million to EBITDA of BASF Group in the first half of 2015. The successful partnership with Gazprom in the area of gas transportation activities will continue.

“Our planning for 2016 is based on an average oil price for Brent crude oil of $40 per barrel and an exchange rate of $1.10 per euro,” Mehren said. “Average gas prices are likely to fall well below the level of 2015.
