This is both explicit and enigmatic -- you get the idea that Tibetans need help defending against a Chinese crackdown, but you don't know exactly what the cry for help is or how we can "answer" it.

Doing this, being very relevant, will drive deeper engagement and revenue but, of course, the web analytics may take a dip as we stop being popular and feeding the content vampires that download our popular content but say “meh” to our brand, product or service, and instead focus on a smaller group of people that care about your content.

Fotini Markopoulou's “Emphatic Technology“ talk was another big success. As a co-founder and CEO of wearables startup doppel Fotini works in psychophysiology and the interplay of mind and body. She aims to develop new applications that influence how we experience things and how we react to them, specifically wearables that can influence a users mood and feelings. Smart-trackers and fitness wearables only supply us with heavy sets of data which, according to her, can be too overwhelming for most users. The focus should instead be on the experience that these technologies can provide. This topic struck a nerve and generated a lot of interest and questions from the audience following the presentation.

In an interview conducted by Catherine Portevin, the Polish philosopher and sociologist Zygmut Bauman considers that the role of modern intellectuals is to help people fight feelings of insecurity. "These days, fears are diffuse, scattered, and ill-defined. It is difficult to put a finger on them, to trace their origins ... This is what makes contemporary fears so difficult to temper and to impede. ... These uncertainties fuel and reinforce one another, forming a state of mind and feelings that only the term 'vague insecurity' aptly describes. We feel unsure of ourselves because we do not know where our fears come from or how to react. Thus we need intellectuals in order to become aware the reality of certain dangers that are invisible to the naked eye, and also to warn us against imaginary threats invented for political and commercial purposes."

But at this point another major problem must be confronted, which is that the technical conditions which provided a justification for the existence and exploitation of salaried labour in the Fordist period have changed entirely – without any change in basic social relations. Paolo Virno says that three functions which have traditionally been separated in the self-understanding of the Western societies, from Aristotle to Hannah Arendt, are now impossible to distinguish. These three functions are labour, conceived as the suffering expenditure of body energy; intellectual activity, which is silent and solitary; and political action, which takes place through speech in public. With our intellectual and communicational forms of labour in the capitalist economy, Virno says we live in a condition of infinite publicity without a public sphere. And the impossibility to make public meaning out of our virtuoso performances – that is, the impossibility to make concrete changes in society – is a humiliation of that which is at once the highest and most common of our capacities, namely the capacity of speech itself. This humiliation is a political affect, which calls for a response. I think that cultural producers, today, are humiliated by the conditions under which we work, by what you might call the institutional market. Can we respond to that? Can we use a more-or-less natural resistance to the contemporary forms of exploitation as a starting-point in the attempt to make a world out of our new understandings of what might be worth doing together in society? The question would probably have seemed exaggerated just a few years ago. Almost no one would have asked it. I find that life gets a little more interesting as the spaces of this question gradually open up today.

“Peakon is really easy for our employees. Once a week they get pinged on email or on the mobile app on their phones, and they just have three simple questions to answer. They can score one to ten, and tell us how they’re feeling on a particular topic at that point in time. You can also see from the type of comments and feedback that we’re getting – the actual feedback we’re getting from employees – is getting more sophisticated and more specific as well. I think they’re getting a better understanding that this is now a feedback cycle, they’re saying something, we’re responding to it, and they’re building on it again, and that’s really really powerful.
