  Artes Mundi - Wu Chi-Ts...
Mae’n arbrofi gyda’r prosesau hyn ac yn chwarae gyda nhw, gan fanteisio ar yr alcemi sy’n gynhenid i ffotograffiaeth gemegol neu newid yr elfennau amseru sy’n peri mai cyfrwng y symudol yw ffilm. Ceir synnwyr o eironi y tu ôl i’w waith – bod artist o Daiwan yn dwli ar ddulliau mor draddodiadol o greu delweddau.
He experiments with and manipulates these processes, exploiting the alchemy inherent in chemical photography or changing the elements of timing which makes film the medium of movement. There is a sense of irony behind his work – that a Taiwanese artist should be preoccupied by such traditional methods of creating images. Living in a highly sophisticated technological world, Wu Chi-Tsung takes delight in almost accidentally finding ways to capture or re-imagine the world around him. All his works, whether presented as still or moving images, use time as an integral part of their make-up, not simply through the convention of a shutter opening and closing but through the subversion of time in how the images were made.

Bouchra Khalili is a Moroccan-French artist. Born in Casablanca, she later studied Film at Sorbonne Nouvelle and Visual Arts at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy. She lives and works in Berlin and Oslo. Working with film, video, installation, photography, and prints, Khaliliʼs practice articulates language, subjectivity, orality, and geographical explorations. Futurefarmers is a group of art and farming practitioners founded in 1995 by California-based artist Amy Franceschini.  A consistent line through Franceschini’s work reveals sustained questioning about how “nature” and “culture” are perceived. She uses various modes to uncover histories and currents related to this divide by challenging systems of exchange and tools used to “hunt” and “gather.” Her work manifests as temporary public art, museum exhibitions, publications, bus tours, public programs and most recently permanent public art.  Her work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Whitney Biennial in New York, New York Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Venice Architectural Biennale and she is the recipient of a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2006 Eureka Fellowship.

Artist gweledol yw Otobong Nkanga a ddechreuodd ei hastudiaethau celf ym Mhrifysgol Obafemi Awolowo yn Ile-Ife, Nigeria a pharhau i astudio yn yr École Superieure des Beaux-Arts ym Mharis, Ffrainc. Mae ei lluniau, gosodiadau, ffotograffau a cherfluniau’n archwilio syniadau amrywiol sy’n ymwneud â thir a’r gwerth sy’n gysylltiedig ag adnoddau naturiol.
Otobong Nkanga is a visual artist who began her art studies at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria and continued at the École Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Otobong Nkanga’s drawings, installations, photographs and sculptures variously examine ideas around land and the value connected to natural resources. Her works, activities and performance permeate all kinds of media and motivate photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and video, though all the different works are thematically connected through architecture and landscape. As a human trace that testifies of ways of living and environmental issues, architecture and landscape act as a sounding board for narration and for ‘the performative’.

Ganwyd Anna Boghiguian, sydd o dras Armenaidd, yn Cairo ym 1946. Ond, nid yw wedi mabwysiadu’r ddinas fel ei hunig gartref erioed, ond yn hytrach mae wedi parhau i gael perthynas wrthwynebus â’r ddinas hyd heddiw.
Anna Boghiguian was born in 1946, an Armenian in Cairo, yet never adopted the city as her only home, continuing to have a conflicting relationship with the city today. Living a nomadic life, the artist has constantly moved from city to city across the globe, from Egypt to Canada and India to France. Her work offers a unique third person yet omniscient view of modern urban communities. Anna Boghiguian’s works are dense compositions. In them are often text, images, collected photographs and other documentary material closely interwoven. The intense colors and her spontaneous and expressive drawings are reminiscent of diary entries. They seem to visualize and record momentary experience and perception in its various facets.

Their work includes documentary material as well as created scenarios, which are presented formally as video installations. Dias & Riedweg embark on conversations with people, as individuals and as members of social groups. They are interested in dialogue and strike up conversations in different parts of the world, capturing experiences, ‘states of spirit’ and personal thoughts. Using a video camera they work together to explore humanity in its many different forms, both geographically and socially. They have made work with street children of Rio de Janeiro, older foreign migrants in Paris, janitors of São Paulo apartment buildings and dog-handlers patrolling the Mexico / USA border. In each, their subjects are active collaborators who document, confess, enquire and answer. Dias & Riedweg select their conversationalists as a response to the place or environment in which they find themselves.

Mae Omer Fast yn creu gosodiadau ffilm llawn haenau sy’n archwilio dulliau o adrodd straeon ac ail-greu’r gorffennol. Digwyddiadau hanesyddol a chyfoes yw ei bwnc wrth iddo ystyried y ffyrdd yr ydym yn adrodd ein hatgofion, sut y caiff naratif ei ailadrodd a digwyddiadau eu portreadu.
Fast’s work has often dealt with the fallacies of language, in particular the disjunction between image and text, intentions and utterances, and the ambiguities of communication and storytelling. In Her Face Was Covered (Part I) and (Part II), the transcript is rendered as a series of text slides, interwoven with images found through Google searches generated by typing in a single line from the script and selecting one of the resulting images. The randomness of this kind of logic builds a picture of the treacherous nature of language and its vast and unruly potential.

Trained as both sculptor and urban planner, his works are rooted in social responsibility and underpinned by a deep belief system. His installations and sculptures mostly incorporate found materials, often from the neighbourhoods where he is engaged, and have historical and iconic significance, such as “In Event of a Race Riot” (2011 onward) in which lengths of decommissioned fire hoses are carefully folded, rolled or stacked and emphatically presented inside gilt box frames. The hoses have iconic significance in relation to the civil rights struggles, in particular with regard to the hosing of peaceful demonstrators in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. The frames act as a device for transformation but also ask us to think again about the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Other sculptures derive from the stage set for performances, such as the series of shoe-shine sculptures.

The judging panel will democratically decide who wins £40,000. How will they choose? What will the eventual winner of this enormous prize money look to do with this award?  I imagine all the artists will spend their prize money in different ways. That could buy an artist’s child around a year at Eton and buy the real power! Dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf mae G39 wedi bod yn cydweithio â Golant Media Ventures i ddatblygu prosiect arloesi digidol cyffrous gyda chymorth NESTA a’r Gronfa Arloesi Digidol i’r Celfyddydau yng Nghymru. Aethant ati i ddarganfod ffyrdd o wella profiad y rheini sy’n mynychu sioeau celf ac o ddeall beth yw barn cynulleidfaoedd ar arddangosfeydd.
Over the past year G39 has been working with Golant Media Ventures to develop an exciting digital innovation project with the support of NESTA and the Digital Innovation Fund for the Arts in Wales. They set out to find ways to improve the experience of those who attend art shows and to understand what audiences think of exhibitions.

Dechreuodd yr adolygiad hwn mewn synfyfyrdod a brofais i yn y rhagddangosiad, pan fues i’n ystyried sut mae profiadau personol pawb yn siapio’r ffordd maen nhw’n gweld yr arddangosfa. Dw i wedi ymgymryd â hunaniaeth arall ar gyfer yr adolygiad hwn sy’n seiliedig ar un o’r darnau cyntaf a welais i o’r enw ‘Chi yw’r Prif Weinidog’.
Artes Mundi 6 for me begins at the ‘free wine, fine guests’ preview reception. I note the presence of Sir Nicholas Serota, Director of the Tate “the most powerful man in the art world” Independent 1/11/14. The three shows at Chapter covered the themes of revolution, media manipulation, control and poverty whilst we the audience, were happily quaffing reassuringly expensive artisan rioja.

The ‘Exception and the Rule’ is one of Brecht’s several teaching plays. Brecht himself translated the term as ‘learning play,’ intended to educate people primarily about socialist politics. Typically, this form of political theatre privileges function above content and foregrounds collective teaching and learning through various modes of performance. It attempts to break down any division between author and audience through reflexive gestures that reveal the ’mechanics of theatre’. Through this and other plays, Brecht developed a way for non actors to learn through playing roles, adopting postures, getting rid of the divide between actors and audience, and focusing on process rather than a final project.

Bydd Bruguera yn defnyddio cyfryngau amrywiol – gwaith gosod, ymyrryd cymdeithasol ac yn bennaf, perfformiad – er mwyn dangos y rôl gall celf ei chwarae yng ngwleidyddiaeth bywyd bob dydd, gan daflu goleuni ar ddealltwriaeth yr unigolyn o’r hunan fel rhan o gof cymdeithasol torfol hanesyddol a chyfoes.
Through an interdisciplinary practice spanning installation, social intervention and most prominently performance, Bruguera explores the role art can play in daily political life, bringing light to the individual’s understanding of self as part of a collective historical and contemporary social memory. Bruguera’s actions encourage viewers to rethink and question notions of fear, vulnerability, empowerment, self-determination and freedom, as well as submission and obedience as social survival strategies.

Elfen sy’n greiddiol i waith Bruguera yw awydd i gydweithio er mwyn galluogi i eraill rannu’r posibiliadau oedd o fewn ei chyrraedd hi. Yn 2003 sefydlodd ysgol gelf amgen – Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Celf Ymddygiad) – yn Havana er mwyn darparu adnoddau technolegol a deallusol nad oedd ar gael i gyw-artistiaid o Giwba yng Nghiwba cyn hynny.
At the core of Bruguera’s practice is a collaborative impulse that opens up the possibilities made available to her to be shared by others. In 2003 she founded the alternative art school Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Art of Behaviour) in Havana to channel technological and intellectual resources unavailable in Cuba to emerging Cuban artists. This has been crucial in the development of a generation of Cuban artists now starting to show internationally. From 2010-15 Bruguera is focusing on her long-term project Immigrant Movement International, based in Queens, NY, which seeks to redefine the immigrant as a global citizen and stimulate artists to create work that can be actively implemented into social, political, and scientific issues.

The West Wing – six impressive new contemporary art galleries – is the biggest space of its kind in Wales. Previously, the Museum had only one gallery to display its range of modern and contemporary art, which is one of the UK’s most important collections. This development gives the Museum nearly 800 square metres more space to show the strength and range of art produced in Wales since the 1950s, and how this relates to the international scene.

Upstairs, Renzo Martens ninety minute documentary film featured absolute poverty. The evidence included a young malnourished suffering child whose blistered anus was showed to the camera. This work suggested that poverty and malnourishment was experienced by Congolese children due to the lower wages of their families who worked for multinational firms. They suffered more than local subsistence farmers. A light box installation outside of the building, also his work, featured a photo of workers in the field.
