The students had the chance to examine their theoretical knowledge in fields of application. In the technical visit, the logistics managers of the future observed the leading companies in various industries. IUE Department of Logistics Management Students came together with the managers in different departments like human resources, logistics, planning, and delivery and stated that this visit was very beneficial for them to observe the processes. IUE Head of Department of Logistics Management Asst. Prof. Muhittin Hakan Demir stated that higher education could not be consist of just theoretical knowledge and the students who knew the sector well were being accepted more quickly in the business world after their graduation.

President Ekrem Demirtaş stated that it was a rare event in Turkey, and a first for Aegean region and Izmir University of Economics, and that the students would successfully complete their education with this scholarship. “Izmir University of Economics is a higher education institution established by means of limited resources by Izmir Chamber of Commerce. We were able to establish our library on our first year with the donation granted by Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey. Up until now nobody else made any donations. Graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) are above the average in Turkey with 85% employment rates. Based on the data by Turkish Statistical Institute (2014), employment rate of higher education graduates in Turkey was 71%. Statistics also revealed that the period of finding employment among individuals aged 20 – 24 was 7.3 months in Turkish workforce whereas it was about 4 months for the graduates of IUE. “Employment Report on Graduates of Izmir University of Economics” titled study revealed that 12.7% of the graduates were entrepreneurs.

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is pursuing its mission of raising entrepreneurs successfully since its establishment. IUE, which offers an international standard education to more than 10 thousand students, has raised the “Entrepreneurship Flag” up to the flagpole for the 3rd time. IUE has qualified to have the new “Entrepreneurship Flag” in the “Bu Gençlikte İş Var” titled competition organized by Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD) for the most number of enterprising projects. 3 thousand 706 university students entered the competition with one thousand 426 projects. Entrepreneurship Flag, which will continue to fly on campus at Izmir University of Economics, has been awarded to 235 IUE students for their projects.

En güçlülerinden biri İzmir'de oluştu" dedi.

National Agency Coordinator İlyas Ülgür stated that students got in a state of confusion in business life after they graduated from the university. He said, "Graduates experience confusion for about 5 - 6 months. One major reason for this is the lack of industry-university collaborations. Business life sits on one summit, students sit on another one. Students should be able to work at any part of the world. Up until now, 80% of the students were able to find a place to perform internship on their own. A student of International Relations was performing internship at a restaurant. 12 consortiums have been established during this period, the strongest one being in Izmir.”

Izmir University of Economics completed its 2013-2023 Strategic Plan studies. Following the 2013-2023 Strategic Plan Search Conference, moderated by Tınaz Titiz, that took place at Boyalık Beach Hotel, Çeşme on September 13-15, 2013 with 90 participants, IUE set forth its straight route. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, indicated that they would be following the global trends in higher education within the next ten year period. Singapore Üniversitesi yaklaşık 100 yıllık bir üniversite ama 1990’lı yıllarda, bir öğretim üniversitesi olmaktan sıyrıldı araştırma üniversitesi oldu. Bazı alanlarda uzmanlık kazandı. Otonom bir yapıya sahip oldu. Üniversite içinde her fakültede öğretim üyesi araştırma yapmaya başladı. 2010 yılında küresel bir araştırma, küresel öğrenme kavramını benimsedik” dedi.

Prof. Dr. Seeram Ramakrishna on the other hand stated that Singapore declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 and took steps to become a world country. Ramakrishna, who stated that English was chosen as the official language, said, “Singapore today is in second place in entrepreneurship and innovativeness in world economics. We worked so hard for this; we placed special importance on higher education. National University of Singapore has a 100 year old history, but in 1990’s we left our identity as an education university and became a research university. It gained specialty on some areas. It became more autonomous. Each faculty member started to do a research at the University. In 2010, we adopted the concept of global research, global learning.”

The Diploma Supplement given to the graduating students in a Higher Education Institution has a big importance for indicating that the student has a more understandable and comparable diploma in abroad. İEÜ Hukuk Fakültesi Dekanı Prof. Dr. Huriye Kubilay, öğrencilerin eğitimleri boyunca her dönem hukuk İngilizcesi eğitimi aldığını, yabancı hukuk kaynaklarına erişebilme, anlayabilme ve yorumlama yeterliliğine kavuştuğunu belirterek, “Dava dilekçelerinin ve sözleşmelerin İngilizce olarak hazırlanması, evrensel hukuk prensiplerinin kavranması ve somut olaylara uygulanması, derslerin içeriğini oluşturuyor. Üniversitemizin diğer fakültelerinde yüzde 100 sağlanan İngilizce öğretim kapsamında Hukuk öğrencilerimiz, ortak dersler alıyor. Yükseköğretim Kurulu Başkanlığı, 2015-2016 akademik yılından itibaren fakültemiz eğitim dilinin yüzde 30 İngilizce olması konusundaki teklifini uygun buldu. Böylece, öğrencilerimiz, Türkçe olarak alacakları “Medeni Hukuk”, “İdare Hukuku”, “Borçlar Hukuku”, “Ticaret Hukuku”, “Medeni Usul Hukuku” gibi temel hukuk derslerinin yanı sıra İngilizce olarak “Avrupa Sermaye Piyasası Hukuku”, “Ticari Tahkim Hukuku” ve “Avrupa Rekabet Hukuku” gibi birçok hukuk dersini yerli ve yabancı öğretim üyelerinden alabilecek” dedi.

Prof. Dr. Huriye Kubilay, IUE Dean of Faculty of Law, stated that students took “English for Law” course each semester throughout their undergraduate studies, and attained competence in accessing, comprehending, interpreting foreign legal resources. She said, “The course content includes preparation of petitions in English, comprehension of universal legal principles, and carrying them into effect. With English being used as the medium of instruction in other faculties of the University, students of Faculty of Law get an opportunity to take common courses. The Higher Education Board has approved the decision of medium of instruction being in 30% English at IUE Faculty of Law starting from 2015-2016 academic year. This way, our students, in addition to taking basic legal courses such as “Civil Law”, “Administrative Law”, “Law of Obligations”, “Commercial Law”, “Civil Procedure Law” in Turkish, will be able to take various courses such as “European Capital Market Law”, “Commercial Arbitration Law”, and “European Competition Law” in English from Turkish and foreign lecturers”.

IUE Department of Computer Engineering Graduate Erdal Çalışkan, who has received the highest graduation grade at the university, will continue his academic studies in Royal Swedish Academy in “Artificial Intelligence and Distributed Systems” field. Erdal Çalışkan pointed out that today, the academicians are working for artificial intelligence that is the subject of many movies and said, “I, myself believe that this field will put its mark on the world in the future. I will improve my studies on Artificial Intelligence. The well qualified education I received from İzmir University of Economics, Department of Computer Engineering played an important role in my acceptance to Royal Swedish Academy which is among the most important universities in this field. I want to thank to the academicians and the founders that established such kind of a higher education to İzmir.”

Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, on the other hand, pointed out that he had been undertaking many duties since the establishment of IUE, and the progresses the University achieved in entrepreneurship area would continue in the new term as well. Prof. Dr. Esen stated that Izmir University of Economics would become a world university with its international consultants, and he said, “We will continue our achievements in entrepreneurship and innovation areas in the new term. We will continue to make the students focal point of all higher education activities. In this way, we will be creating learning environments that match the learning habits of new generations. We will increase the global visibility of the University, which maintains its role as a leader in higher education, through new initiatives in the international arena. Başkan Ekrem Demirtaş, EXPO’ya destek için İEÜ’nün üzerine düşen görevi ciddiyetle gerçekleştirdiğini belirterek, “Kentimizin EXPO 2015’e aday olduğu dönemde BİE üyesi ülkelerle ilişkilerimizi güçlendirmek için bir öğrencilerini üniversitemizde tam burslu okutmayı teklif etmiştik. Amacımız, İzmir’imizin adaylığına bu yolla destek vermekti. O dönemde teklifimiz büyük ilgi görmüştü. Sözümüzün arkasında durduk. Kentimizin EXPO 2020’ye resmen aday olmasıyla da birlikte konuyu daha düzenli hale getirerek BİE’ye üye ülkelere aktardık. 24’ü Afrika’dan olmak üzere Avrupa, Asya ve Amerika kıtalarından öğrenciler, eğitim için üniversitemize geliyor. Bugün 40 ülkeden 46 öğrenci, burs kapsamında İEÜ kalitesiyle yükseköğretim alıyor” dedi.

Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, indicated that they granted full scholarships to students of member countries of Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), the organization that holds the EXPO Fairs. President Demirtaş stated they did their share of work earnestly to support EXPO. He said, “During the time when Izmir was running for candidacy for EXPO 2015, we offered a full scholarship for a student of a BIE member country in order to strengthen the relations. Our purpose was to support Izmir’s candidacy this way. That time our offer received a great deal of attention. We kept our promise. When our city officially became an EXPO 2020 candidate, we decided to make it more regular and shared this with BIE member countries. 24 students from Africa and from continents of Europe, Asia, and America come to our university to study. Today, total of 46 students from 40 countries receive higher education with the distinction of IUE scholarships.”

Congratulation letters sent by Prof. Dr. Yekta Saraç, Chairman of the Council of Higher Education (YOK), to the students placed into Izmir University of Economics faculties as top students in 2015 – 2016 Academic Year, were presented to them by IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen and the senate members. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen congratulated the top students and he said, “Students were placed into the University after a compelling examination process.
