Some of the works we have chosen for this opportunity, together with the Biennale's music director, were originally written for pianos or harpsichord (as is the case with Ligeti's work).

"The Ensemble is really fantastic – I cannot describe in words the level of work, energy of people, musicality and precision ... I can hardly wait for the concert in Zagreb! It will be a special event and an experience I will never forget ... See you on Monday night!”

„I enjoy performing contemporary pieces, especially works of composers who have found their original expression. A good example is Moritz Egger, whose songs I recently sang in Zagreb, or Peter Eötvösand Christian Jost, whose works I also had a chance to perform. I like compositions in which I can recognize aspects of life, which have been inspired by life. I also enjoy pieces which are rich in colors and provoke an emotional reaction with the audience. Isn't the aim of music to remind us of some moments of our lives, or to tell us a story we may not have experienced, but we feel compassion for?“

Artist Adam Basanta from Montréal, Canada as a composer mainly focuses on experimental music. He was drawn with this open call in which he could create with different audio, but also visual (spatial) elements. At the Student Centre Gallery during Biennale's week, visitors will be able to hear and see live how this creative and interesting artist reinterpreted in sound the logo of this years' MBZ and in which way it occupies (visually and audible) the space where it will be placed. Regarding the fact Adam Basanta's previous works are in the field of so called „sculptural sound installations“, the spatial dimension is very important and underlines in his works. The artist himself explains this work with following words: „In Five Lines, Crossing, sound will be produced exclusively using feedback: an amplification technique which "makes audible" the physical relationships between microphones, used speaker cones, the galleryʼs surrounding acoustic environment, and the Contemporary musical history of Zagreb and Croatia“.

Over the subsequent years, the festival framework assumed a more distinct and compact structure, the mature reflection enhanced the initial impetus. Different views on topics came as the natural course of events, having been established as a continuous feature depending on the festival's leadership. Different festival themes were in focus, from electronics to women composers; several countries were stressed in the festivals' programs like Sweden or Canada for example. There were festivals within the main festival (popular Urbofest or World New Music Days that was held in Zagreb in 2005 and 2011), numerous exhibitions, seminars, workshops, etc. Still MBZ was always focused on the institution of composer's persona. Messiaen, Stockhausen, Stravinsky, Cage, Berio, Penderecki, Lutoslawski, Maderna, Kagel, Globokar, Nono, Xenakis,Lucier, Schnebel, Reich, Murail, Maxwell Davis, Birtwistle, Schaffer, Nyman, Cerha, are only some that were MBZ's guests.

Last night at the &TD Theater there was literally no place for an extra chair, and after the first complete performance of all five episodes of the Soap Opera many were smiling broadly. When will the next performance be? When will the new season of this soap opera start? These were the questions one could hear after the performance. The composers Mladen Tarbuk, Mirela Ivièeviæ, Zoran Juraniæ, Silvio Foretiæ and Gordan Tudor and the author of the drama template Irena Škoriæ received standing ovations for their work on this project, which was created in co-production between the Cantus Ensemble, the University of Zagreb Student Center's Culture of Change and the Music Biennale. Their success would not have been possible without the excellent Cantus Ensemble conducted by Maestro Ivan Josip Skender, director Dora Ruždjak Podolski and fantastic, dedicated singers who were totally committed to this silly game. These were Gorana Biondiæ, Ivana Srbljan, Miljenko Ðuran and Ozren Bilušiæ.

Pascal Touzeau već nekoliko tjedana boravi u Zagrebu pripremajući predstavu Kraljevi bogova čijom će praizvedbom Balet Hrvatskog narodnog kazališta večeras zaključiti 28. MBZ.
Pascal Touzeau has been staying in Zagreb for several weeks now, preparing the performance of Kings of Gods, whose premiere by the Croatian National Theater Ballet will conclude the 28th MBZ. “I am glad I could accept the invitation of the manager of the Croatian National Theater Ballet Leonard Jakovina as I like very much your city, the ballet ensemble and the concept of the Kings of Gods,” said the famous French choreographer. The ballet consists of two parts. The first is performed along with the composition Complex Poetry by Tomislav Oliver, and the composition by Ivana Kiš for the second part is called The Selfish Gene Machine. Both compositions will be performed by the CroatianNational Theater Orchestra conducted by Maestro Dian Tchobanov at tonight’s first performance and premiere. The words which the choreographer associates with the first part are virtuosity and neoclassicism, while the second part relies more on creating the atmosphere and emotions. All in accordance with music. In addition, as much as dancers find it more comfortable to always dance to the same recording, the choreographer is actually looking forward to the challenge of performing with orchestra and live music. “The stage and the orchestra are two different worlds, but all of it, including the entire team behind the scene as well as the people in the audience, represent the life of theater and bring even more energy into the performance.” With these words the choreographer welcomes you to the Croatian National Theater, to the end of the adventure to which we have embarked from this same spot eight days ago. And until 2017, do not forget: the Music Biennale Zagreb remains open. You stay as well. Deep bow to all of you, honorificabilitudinitas !
