According to the town archive Kiel the photo depicted most likely part of the march to the cemetry where the burial service for the victims of the revolution in Kiel, which took place on 10 November 1918 (click to magnify). Some identified Lothar Popp, Gustav Noske and Karl Artelt in the photo. The grand son of the latter, also Karl Artelt, was sure that his grand father was the person second left in the first row. He argued that his grand father was of rather small to middle height and that he, because of a problem with his eye sight, did not carry a rifle by that time but a pistol; see note 3 below. However in February 2015 the town archive ascertained, following a hint from Matthias Sperwien, that this photo showed the funeral procession of 20 November 1918 in Berlin for the victims of the revolution in the capital.
