Aan de uni-versiteit was ik blij om te zien dat de roman op de verplichte literatuurlijst stond, zo had ik al één boek minder te lezen. Als ik het goed voor heb, moest Boelgakov zijn manuscripten verbranden om zichzelf en zijn vrouw te beschermen tegen het Sovjetregime op de vooravond van een inval.

When I started university, I and was delighted to find it on the literature program that I took up, which meant I had one less book to read. I think Bulgakov had to burn his manuscripts for the story to protect himself and his wife from the Soviet authorities in the event of a raid. I can’t remember if it’s a quote of his or a posthumous tag, but the phrase 'Manuscripts don’t burn' really struck a chord with me; the notion that you can’t destroy an idea, no matter what. In Bulgakov’s case I guess its two fingers to totalitarianism too».

Dans une interview, quand on lui a demandé s'il était un fan de Boulgakov, il a répondu: «Mon père me tendit 'Le maître et Marguerite' juste avant je suis allé à l'université et je l'ai lu sans aucune connaissance du contexte social dans lequel Boulgakov l’a écrit. À l'université j'ai été ravi de le trouver sur le programme de littérature, ce qui signifiait que j'avais un livre de moins à lire. Je pense que Boulgakov a du brûler ses manuscrits pour se protéger contre les autorités soviétiques à la veille d'un raid. Je ne me souviens pas si c'est une citation de lui-même, mais la phrase 'Les manuscrits ne brûlent pas' a vraiment touché une corde sensible chez moi; l'idée que l’on ne peut pas détruire une idée, quoi qu'il arrive. Dans le cas de Boulgakov je suppose que c’était également un majeur soulevé au totalitarisme».
