Sir Alan William Parker was born into a working class family in North London. He started out as a copywriter for advertising agencies in the 1960s and 1970s and later began to write his own television commercial scripts, and directed many award winning commercials. A Midnight Express (1978) is his breakthrough film. It was a gritty film set in a Turkish prison, which was lauded by critics and which ended up earning Parker a number of Oscar nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture. He was later nominated for Best Director for Mississippi Burning (1988). He has directed a number of one-off musicals including Bugsy Malone (1976), Fame (1980), Pink Floyd The Wall (1982), The Commitments (1991) and Evita (1996).

Daniel Šuljić, the newly-elected Animafest art director, presented the films from the programme entitled CINEMA FOR THE EAR. Himself a musician – he plays the guitar in bands Stampedo and The Welcomin’ Committee In Flames – he announced the audiovisual parade of cult musical films of extreme importance for animation and pop culture: the psychedelic Yellow Submarine by George Dunning, abounding in The Beatles’ music; Pink Floyd – The Wall by Alan Parker, a live-action film with the cult fifteen-minute animated segment; and sci-fi Heavy Metal by Gerald Potterton, featuring Black Sabbath, Nazareth and DEVO.

Bruno and Frieda fall in love when they spy each other from their respective mountaintops. They race towards one other, only to be blocked by what appears to be a long thin wall, which from our vantage point looks like a line. When Bruno is ushered inside this "wall," he discovers that it contains a strange 2-dimensional world populated by paper-thin creatures with their own peculiar rules and logic.

The festival programme CINEMA FOR THE EAR will screen three older films of utmost importance for animation and pop culture, YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968) by GEORGE DUNNING, a film of psychedelic and exceptional animation and hypnotic, surreal images accompanying the music of the uberpopular Liverpool four THE BEATLES; PINK FLOYD – THE WALL (1982) by ALAN PARKER speaking of estrangement and human isolation, an issue more burning than ever. This 15-minute animated sequence is a true pop culture classic, created by the political illustrator GERALD SCARFE. The final programme entry is the sci-fi film HEAVY METAL by GERALD POTTERTON, featuring scenes of violence, nudity and sex with the sounds of Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, Cheap Trick, DEVO and Grand Funk.

The movie tells the story of rock singer Pink who is sitting in his hotel room in Los Angeles, burnt out from the music business and only able to perform on stage with the help of drugs. Based on the 1979 double album The Wall by Pink Floyd, the film begins in Pink's youth where he is crushed by the love of his mother. Several years later he is punished by the teachers in school because he is starting to write poems. Slowly he begins to build a wall around himself to be protected from the world outside. The film shows all this in massive and epic pictures until the very end where he tears down the wall and breaks free. The film contains fifteen minutes of elaborate animation sequences by the political cartoonist and illustrator Gerald Scarfe, part of which depict a nightmarish vision of the German bombing campaign over the United Kingdom during World War II set to the song Goodbye Blue Sky.

Animafest Friday at the Europa cinema begins with a series of films by the French studio Folimage at 11am. Cartoon East, including six films nominated by six regional festivals is scheduled for 5pm: Croatia is represented by My Way by Veljko Popović and Svjetlan Junaković. The Wall of Sighs by Dušan Kastelic and Igor Šinkovec represents Slovenia, A Stray Cosmonaut by Marija Milanović-Lazarevski comes from Serbia, Marius Pandela’s White Noise represents Romania, Viliam by Veronika Obertova represents Slovakia, while Bosnia and Herzegovina sent Wondermilk by Ivan Ramadan. During the festival, The Grand and Student Competition juries will award one of the nominated films, providing it thus with a nomination for Cartoon d’Or, the only European short animated film prize.
