The potential is there. Japan is world leader in the world market for functional foods, before USA and Europe. A functional food is a food given an additional function, often one related to health-promotion or disease prevention, by adding new ingredients. Japan more-or-less invented ‘functional foods’ in the 1980s. The Netherlands is world leader in tomato and cucumber yields. Whereas in the Netherlands on average 48 kg tomatoes are produced per square meter and 66 kg of cucumbers, Japan produces about 6 kg tomatoes and 5 kg of cucumbers. The Netherlands uses only 14% of the Japanese tomato acreage to produce even more tomatoes.

'We optimise the site content and structure based on client behaviour. The so-called search behaviour of starters is an important indicator for us to see what they find really important.' A calendar showing events for start-ups, being organised by the local Rabobanks and other organisations, ranging from walk-in consultations to master classes, has been added to the website in recent months.

‘Dit initiatief was er op gericht om Nederland weer terug te krijgen in de hoogste regionen van innovatieve landen. Met succes want toen we begonnen stonden we op de vijftiende plaats en inmiddels zijn we weer terug in de top-tien. Hoewel het platform niet meer bestaat, is het huidige kabinet ook heel actief op het gebied van innovatie. Dat beleid spitst zich toe op de zogeheten topsectoren. Dat zijn de sectoren waarin de bv Nederland nu al uitblinkt, zoals in de Food & Agri en chemie. Een goede aanpak, maar ik pleit er wel voor dat het innovatieve blikveld wordt verruimd tot andere gebieden, bijvoorbeeld het onderwijs.’

And rightly so, says Draijer, who was closely involved in the Innovation Platform, the initiative launched by former Prime Minister Balkenende. ‘This initiative was aimed at returning the Netherlands to the forefront of innovative countries. It has been a success, because when we started we were ranked 15th and we are now back in the top 10. While the Platform itself no longer exists, the current government has continued to be very active in the field of innovation. This policy focuses on designated top sectors. These are the sectors in which the Dutch business community currently already has a leading position, such as Food & Agri and the chemical industry. This is a good approach, but I would advocate extending the innovative perspective to other areas as well, such as education for instance.’
