TU Delft postdoc Sander van Cranenburgh is working together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment on rebuilding the so-called National Model System for mobility analysis, using regret models instead of utility models. The results could have an impact on the development of transport policy (whether or not road user charges are a good idea, for example) and are therefore of major relevance to society.

Toen de onderzoekers de resultaten van analyses met het nutsmodel en het spijtmodel naast elkaar legden, bleek het laatste statistisch gezien inderdaad iets beter bij de data te passen. Maar wat meer opviel dan het verschil in zogeheten ‘model fit’, was het verschil in voorspellingsresultaten.

Chorus expected that his regret-based model would be a good alternative to the utility model in cases of medical choice. “I know from psychological theory and experience that it is a type of choice that is well-suited to my model, being difficult and consequential. People also tend to feel a greater duty to justify their choices where health matters are concerned: can you explain to your partner or child why you have chosen a certain treatment? It would appear that the regret model performs relatively well in such cases.”

Om de integratie tussen de deelnemende groepen te bevorderen, komen alle phd-ers en postdocs vier keer per jaar bijeen tijdens zogeheten reflectiedagen. “Een fysieke ontmoeting is de beste manier om kennis uit te wisselen. Vaak doen we een sociale activiteit, gericht op de inhoud. Zo zijn we een keer gaan fietsen door Rotterdam, om waterkeringen te bekijken. Een groot succes, en qua aanpak zeker uniek te noemen. Zo komen verbindingen tot stand!”

In order to promote the integration between the participating groups, all of the PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers meet up four times a year during the so-called days for reflection. “A physical meeting is the best way to exchange knowledge. Often we participate in a social activity, focusing on the subject matter. We've cycled through Rotterdam, for example, looking at the flood defences. It was a great success and certainly quite a unique approach as well. And that's how connections are made!” There is also an annual meeting with user groups, such as Deltares, the district water boards, ministries and HKV Lijn in Water consultants. “Here, too, the intended objective is cross-pollination. After all, it's crucial that the knowledge now being developed can be applied in the future.”

“Neem het zogeheten DNA modelling, dat is één van de speerpunten in onderzoekssamenwerking tussen de TU Delft en het LUMC in Leiden, ook wel medical delta genoemd. Nu al kan met een buisje bloed worden aangetoond welke ziektes iemand waarschijnlijk gaat krijgen. Straks kan dit zelfs al met een wattenstaafje met DNA uit de mond. Of neem de opkomst van de robotica in de operatiekamer. Ook die innovatie staat voor de deur. Dergelijke ontwikkelingen zijn niet te stoppen en hebben een enorme maatschappelijke impact. Het zou mooi zijn als we bijvoorbeeld de ministeries van OCW en Volksgezondheid kunnen bijpraten over wat er zoal mogelijk is, zodat men daar op kan anticiperen.”

In addition, the Delft School would like to offer more practicebased PhD programmes (the PD Engs), a new phenomenon in the academic world. “There are many professionals aged around thirty or forty who would very much like to acquire a deeper knowledge of a particular aspect of their work and who would like to gain a PhD in the subject. Examples that come to mind are risk management, security, privacy and asset management. However, they are deterred by the idea of embarking on a complete academic programme. They will therefore shortly have the opportunity to write a PhD thesis on the basis of slightly different criteria than those for regular PhD programmes.”

Künneke: “Om met het eerste thema te beginnen: in de komende jaren zal Nederland een toenemende stroom van ‘nieuwe’ gassen zien, zoals ‘groene’ gassen, waterstof en synthesegas. Daarnaast zal in toenemende mate gas uit andere herkomstlanden worden geïmporteerd via het uitgebreide aardgasnetwerk of met tankschepen als vloeibaar gas (het zogeheten LNG). De samenstelling van dit ‘nieuwe gas’ is anders dan het traditioneel in Nederland gedistribueerde Groningse aardgas, dat een zeer unieke kwaliteit heeft. Het huidige aardgasnet is daar niet op ingericht, net zo min als de apparatuur van de eindgebruiker. Deze verschillende gassen kunnen niet zonder meer worden gemengd. Bovendien kunnen bij de eindverbruiker levensgevaarlijke situaties ontstaan indien gas met afwijkende kwaliteiten in de cv-ketel of het gasfornuis wordt verbrand. Er moet dus een transitie plaatsvinden van de klassieke mono-gaswereld naar een multi-gaswereld. Het EDGaR-programma onderzoekt belangrijke technische, beleidsmatige, economische en juridische aspecten die daarmee samenhangen. Momenteel lopen er 12 onderzoeksprojecten.”

For more than fifty years, natural gas has been the primary source of energy in the Netherlands, for industry, the service sector and households. More than 60% of the country’s domestic electricity production is based on natural gas, while almost every home and every business is connected to the gas network. Market penetration on this scale is unparalleled anywhere in the world. Moreover, the Netherlands is a major gas exporter in Europe and is keen to profile itself as north-west Europe’s gas hub. Weijnen explains, “When it comes to developing technology and markets, our country is right at the forefront – a position that offers tremendous opportunities now that Europe is on the verge of making the transition from conventional to sustainable energy. In the next few decades, gas will play an important role in this. After all, it is a relatively clean conventional fuel and is a flexible addition to renewable energy sources that are not available on a continuous basis.”
