L'objectif du projet était de déterminer de quelle manière les plantes aquatiques sont menacées dans la région méditerranéenne. Nous savons que les zones humides font l'objet d'un grave déclin et nous voulions savoir comment cela affecte les espèces végétales et quelles sont les principales causes du déclin.

The aim of the project was to determine how threatened aquatic plants are in the Mediterranean region. We know that wetland habitats are undergoing severe declines and we wanted to know how this affects plant species and what are the main causes for declines. A list of 473 plant species was identified, mainly occurring in North Africa and the western European Mediterranean. Of those, 150 are endemic to the Mediterranean region. Our results showed that 73 out of 473 aquatic plant species are threatened with extinction of which 15 are Critically Endangered. Among those are Armeria helodes, an Italian endemic with less than 50 individual plants left in the wild, or Lotus benoistii, a Moroccan endemic with a range of less than 3 km². One species, Laurembergia tetrandra, has become extinct in the region due to water extraction and fires. A further 58 aquatic plant species are classed as Near Threatened. The list of species was not comprehensive for the Mediterranean and there is more work to be done in the eastern part of its range, especially in countries as rich in biodiversity as Turkey and Greece.

The Tour du Valat employs around sixty employees who are involved throughout the Mediterranean. Our scientific team, comprising around thirty specialists in Plant Ecology, Ornithology, Aquatic Macrofauna, Hydrology, Geomatics, Socio-economics, Geography and Integrated Management, are working on programmes of research into the functioning of wetlands, and are testing out methods of management. The results are communicated via training, partnerships, and the implementation of innovative projects being carried out in collaboration with a wide range of partners.

The first appeal to draw up an international wetlands convention dates from 1962; it was launched during the closing session of the MAR project, organised by Luc Hoffmann in the Camargue, at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, in November 1962. The MAR project, initiated in 1960, was a response to concerns caused by the destruction of vast areas of wetland in Europe and by the decline in water birds which was taking place as a result. Luc Hoffmann played a key role, with the participation of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and its Resources (now IUCN – World Conservation Union), the International Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Bureau (IWRB – now Wetlands International), and the International Council for Bird Preservation, (ICBP – now BirdLife International).

This is far from being the first ringing operation in Algeria, but it is the first time that the greater flamingo has bred so early. Until now, the various ringing operations carried out in the Mediterranean have not started until June. It is thus a real scientific exploit, in the face of very difficult conditions, achieved by the research teams led by Prof. Samraoui, head of the Guelma University Wetlands Research Laboratory. The volunteers had to deal with a violent sandstorm, cold temperatures and logistical difficulties, but despite it all 62 greater flaming chicks will henceforward be sporting yellow Algerian rings with a black code.

Nearly all of the Algerian wetlands on the Ramsar List are in a satisfactory state in terms of their ecological balance. However, the concentration of people close to some of them has led to their overexploitation with excessive water abstraction, the abusive exploitation of their fish resources, and pollution due to waste water discharge and the accumulation of solid waste.

This is why wetlands management occupies a central place in the rural renewal policies, which are based on the involvement of local communities in the implementation of integrated rural development projects concerning agricultural activities, habitat, and basic infrastructure. These projects aim to lessen the pressure on these fragile areas by improving living conditions and the income of the people who live nearby, and in the long term, achieve the wise and sustainable use of wetland habitats.
