To mitigate threats in the delta, basic research must be continued to identify the conservation priorities, and promote real applications in the field. These research activities must also target (agri)cultural practices that are favourable to wetlands, and traditional income generating activities. Based on the results, an integrated and participative management approach can be developed and put in place. We must also increase awareness of local, national, and international conservation issues so that people understand what helps to maintain rich biodiversity in the Gediz Delta.

Managed by the Tour du Valat, the MWO is intended to become a major tool for monitoring and assessing the state of conservation and evolution of wetlands in the Mediterranean basin. Wetlands need protection and adequate management that should go hand in hand with raising awareness on the importance of freshwater ecosystems and the services they provide. The adequate management of wetlands is furthermore important to adapt to climate change impacts. Last but not least, more research and fieldwork are needed to improve our understanding of wetland ecosystems and the species inhabiting them.

Most of the problems facing the Gediz Delta are not only found in this region, rather they are common in many wetlands around the world, as we can see in the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory report. As it is a particularly complex site, the failures and successes in the delta have improved our knowledge for other wetland conservation practices. In particular, we now know more about how to work in countries in which the legal framework for nature conservation and the application of such laws is weak, whereas the negative pressure due to development policies is high.

Working at the invitation of the Citron Jaune national street art centre, since March this year the Le Phun Company has installed their plant beings in and around the Tour du Valat, the le Verdier marshes and the nearby village of Le Sambuc. The idea behind this project is to build bridges between locals, tourists and scientists using the themes of biodiversity and wetlands, and to emphasize the importance of the locality and the people who live there. The project will continue until the Envies Rhônements festival in July 2011, when a special event will be organised to mark its culmination.

Within the framework of this project, our principal contribution was in terms of awareness raising activities, education, advocacy, and our participation in legal proceedings. As the ecological integrity of the Delta is vital for local socio-cultural and economic sustainability, raising public awareness and mobilising public opinion about the importance of the Gediz Delta in terms of sustainable use are the most important tools that can force decision makers to address the threats. That explains why our overall approach included and gave more power to local stakeholders at every level of wetlands conservation from research to advocacy, legal actions, education, and awareness raising and information campaigns.

The first part of this workshop was devoted to the training of the observers and trainers in national networks, with the presentation of various educational tools. The second part focused on the AEWA plan of Action for Africa. One objective of this workshop was to facilitate the exchanges between the IWC national coordinators and AEWA national focal points responsible for the conservation of waterbirds and wetlands, so as to improve their study and conservation in North Africa. On 6 July 2012, the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention awarded the 5th Wetlands Conservation Prize. Luc Hoffmann, who is considered to be one of the pillars of the Ramsar Convention, received the “Honorary Prize for the 40th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention”. Meanwhile, Thymio Papayannis, founding father of the MedWet initiative, and a major advocate of wetlands, who has been involved in Ramsar Convention activities for 26 years, was awarded the “Prize for Achievements”.

Au niveau international j’ai également participé à diverses rencontres internationales,  notamment l’exposition universelle sur l’eau de Saragosse en 2008 où le pavillon Algérie a reconstitué le système Foggara illustrant la gestion durable de l’eau, la 10ème  session de la Conférence des parties contractantes à la Convention sur les zones humides à Changwon (Corée) en 2008 qui a permis de faire aboutir la requête relative au retrait de deux sites Ramsar classés sur le registre de Montreux, ou encore la 11ème Session de la Conférence des parties contractantes à la Convention Ramsar sur les zones humides à Bucarest en 2012, où j'ai contribué à l’organisation d’un évènement parallèle des pays maghrébins (Algérie, Tunisie, Maroc) sur le thème « Les zones humides comme trait d’union entre les pays du Maghreb ».

I also participated in various international meetings, such as the international expo on water and sustainable development in Saragossa in 2008, where the Algeria Pavilion displayed a model of the Foggara system to illustrate sustainable water management, the 10th meeting of the Conference of Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands in Changwon (South Korea) in 2008, which enabled us to finalise a request to have two Ramsar Sites removed from the Montreux Record, as well as the 11th meeting of Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention in Bucharest in 2012, where I contributed to the organisation of an event organised by North African countries (Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco) on the theme of “Wetlands as links between North African countries.”
