Axel Meyer is one of the world's leading and most widely cited experts in the field of evolutionary biology. He disproved textbook dogmas that had been thought to be valid for several decades and was one of the pioneers in using genetic data in evolutionary biology. By collecting empirical data, Axel Meyer's laboratory team questioned the doctrine that geographical barriers are the prerequisite for the origin of new species. Carrying out research in the crater lakes in Nicaragua, he was also able to demonstrate that the evolution in certain types of fish repeated itself independently from each other. For this research project Axel Meyer received an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) amounting to funding of 2.5 million euros.

The reverse of the portrait-format card gives his address and the front shows Bosch in a wide-brimmed hat and dark, high-buttoned suit that make him look rather like an itinerant preacher. But he’s a precision mechanic and an electrical engineer. The suit is hard-wearing, but most importantly it is made from pure new wool. This ensures good circulation of air between the body and the environment, according to Gustav Jäger, a zoologist and doctor. Robert Bosch had attended a number of Jäger’s lectures at Stuttgart Polytechnic, and he came to regard his “standard Jäger suit” as a key contributor to health and longevity.

During his postdoctoral period at the Harvard Medical School, Sprenger worked on bacterial metabolic pathways that enabled the degradation of glycerine. But only now, 25 years on, has the degradation of glycerine become a key process in biodiesel production, thus making Sprenger's work extremely important. The boom in biodiesel production generates large amounts of raw glycerine as waste product. "In rape mills, rape oil is turned into fatty acids and glycerine, which accounts for around ten per cent per weight. This means that in Germany around 500,000 t of glycerine are generated by biodiesel production every year," said Sprenger who is working on the challenging task of turning raw glycerine into useful materials using bacteria in a process that does away with expensive processing steps.

Then, with the words, "I'll go and get it for you", the zoologist bravely stepped onto the trunk, took the first two or three steps easily until the trunk began to turn below him, and after a few failed attempts to keep his balance by moving his legs quickly he fell unstoppably into the water - but he still managed to grab the plant as he fell. Soaking wet but triumphant because he had managed to get the plant, the zoologist got out of the water, with some help from several students' umbrellas, and started off home straight away to dry off.

Der Zoologe René Verheyen bereicherte ab den dreißiger Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts die ornithologischen Sammlungen weitreichend und ergänzte sie dabei insbesondere auch um viele Exemplare der belgischen und zentralafrikanischen Fauna.

The bird collection is made up of around 82,000 specimens. It includes a significant collection of skeletons and eggs as well as type material for 92 species. It is one of the institute's oldest collections and for much of the historical material, including the tropical birds, we owe our thanks to ornithologist Bernard du Bus de Gisignies, the first director of the Museum of Natural Sciences in 1848. Alphonse Dubois, who was appointed curator of the vertebrate collections in 1869, was the first to describe many of De Gisignies’ specimens. In the 1930s Zoologist René Verheyen added a great deal of material to the ornithological collections and in particular, an exceptionally large collection of Belgian and Central African fauna.

Quelques-unes des principales attractions de la zone sont celle dédiée aux animaux nocturnes, celle de la forêt tropicale et la reconstruction de la jungle de l'Asie Mineure, avec des lions indiens, des tigres et des léopards en semi-liberté.
