The cultural development of mankind has led to constantly improved living conditions over the millennia. Why? For Heinrich August Winkler, a German historian, the principle of power sharing – between church and state, within the state itself and between social sectors – is responsible for our civilisation’s progress. Matt Ridley, a zoologist, sees the key in the division of labour and the exchange of ideas. For Ian Morris, a British historian and archaeologist, man has turned geography to his advantage. Finally, for the evolutionary psychologist Steven Pinker, the modern state and the market economy have driven back the use of force. His conclusion: we now live in the most peaceful of all possible worlds.

Axel Meyer is one of the world's leading and most widely cited experts in the field of evolutionary biology. He disproved textbook dogmas that had been thought to be valid for several decades and was one of the pioneers in using genetic data in evolutionary biology. By collecting empirical data, Axel Meyer's laboratory team questioned the doctrine that geographical barriers are the prerequisite for the origin of new species. Carrying out research in the crater lakes in Nicaragua, he was also able to demonstrate that the evolution in certain types of fish repeated itself independently from each other. For this research project Axel Meyer received an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) amounting to funding of 2.5 million euros.

The book, which is available in german only at this stage, includes David Bittners personal relationships with individual grizzly bears in the Alaskan wilderness as well as the situation of the return of brown bears back to Switzerland. In the near future we really have to deal with bears increasingly and where they appear emotions go high. However, there are measures that can be set up in order to guarantee a safe and peaceful side by side of humans and bears, even in highly populated Switzerland. Finally, detailed information about brown bear ecology and biology surround this highly and extraordinary illustrated book.

Robert Bosch’s first business card is adorned with an interesting image. The reverse of the portrait-format card gives his address and the front shows Bosch in a wide-brimmed hat and dark, high-buttoned suit that make him look rather like an itinerant preacher. But he’s a precision mechanic and an electrical engineer. The suit is hard-wearing, but most importantly it is made from pure new wool. This ensures good circulation of air between the body and the environment, according to Gustav Jäger, a zoologist and doctor. Robert Bosch had attended a number of Jäger’s lectures at Stuttgart Polytechnic, and he came to regard his “standard Jäger suit” as a key contributor to health and longevity.

The objectives of his graduate and doctoral research were the same ones as he has today: "I wanted to gain a better understanding of metabolic pathways and find out the reasons why such a large number of diverse metabolic pathways exists, and I am still pursuing this goal today," Sprenger explained. During his postdoctoral period at the Harvard Medical School, Sprenger worked on bacterial metabolic pathways that enabled the degradation of glycerine. But only now, 25 years on, has the degradation of glycerine become a key process in biodiesel production, thus making Sprenger's work extremely important. The boom in biodiesel production generates large amounts of raw glycerine as waste product. "In rape mills, rape oil is turned into fatty acids and glycerine, which accounts for around ten per cent per weight. This means that in Germany around 500,000 t of glycerine are generated by biodiesel production every year," said Sprenger who is working on the challenging task of turning raw glycerine into useful materials using bacteria in a process that does away with expensive processing steps.

“Fish are ideal: you can keep large numbers of them and their eyes have basically the same structure as human eyes”, says the zoologist, who conducts research within the CellNetworks Cluster of Excellence at Heidelberg University. The main difference is that fish eyes grow and regenerate continuously. However, according to Wittbrodt, even human eyes have a cell type with the capacity to regenerate. “Right now, we’re testing this repair work on fish eyes. Maybe the results can someday be applied in ophthalmology, to help heal retinal injuries, for instance.”

The zoologist is hardly advocating a world without farm animals and pets – he’s simply doing his utmost to insure that they are treated as well as can be possibly expected. Ultimately the relationship between animals and their owners is based on a long cultural history, and this context needs to be considered when developing improved ways of caring for animals. His research is in service to society: “We help to better the conditions of husbandry by attempting to understand what animals need, what is best for them and what inflicts the least amount of suffering when it is unavoidable, for instance with medical procedures.”

Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) formed the Ecology term in his book "General Morphology of Organisms". However, he can not be named as the inventor of this scientific branch, as ecological problems had already been covered since ancient times. As early as around 300 B.C. the works of Theophrast contained many corresponding examples.

Solo negli ultimi anni sono stati nuovamente avvistati in Siria altri criceti dorati, importati successivamente in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.

. there was an excursion (Systematic Botany and Zoology) one cool Saturday morning in May that had been organised by the working group leaders: the botanist was very reserved; the zoologist more active. The botanist spotted an interesting-looking plant in a pond 3 metres away from the bank. The plant looked as if it were accessible via an old fallen tree trunk. The botanist stood there pondering and was definitely hoping that a young, brave student would take the path across the tree trunk to fetch the plant for him. But students can be mean creatures, of course, so they all just stood there coolly. Then, with the words, "I'll go and get it for you", the zoologist bravely stepped onto the trunk, took the first two or three steps easily until the trunk began to turn below him, and after a few failed attempts to keep his balance by moving his legs quickly he fell unstoppably into the water - but he still managed to grab the plant as he fell. Soaking wet but triumphant because he had managed to get the plant, the zoologist got out of the water, with some help from several students' umbrellas, and started off home straight away to dry off.

The bird collection is made up of around 82,000 specimens. It includes a significant collection of skeletons and eggs as well as type material for 92 species. It is one of the institute's oldest collections and for much of the historical material, including the tropical birds, we owe our thanks to ornithologist Bernard du Bus de Gisignies, the first director of the Museum of Natural Sciences in 1848. Alphonse Dubois, who was appointed curator of the vertebrate collections in 1869, was the first to describe many of De Gisignies’ specimens. In the 1930s Zoologist René Verheyen added a great deal of material to the ornithological collections and in particular, an exceptionally large collection of Belgian and Central African fauna.
