За съжаление, бяха открити и множество загинали птици под електроразпределителните стълбове и жици. Общо бяха открити 89 жертви от видовете: бял и черен щъркел, орел змияр, обикновен мишелов, голям и малък ястреб, гарван, горска улулица, бухал, синявица, както и множество пойни птици.

The activity of mapping of the dangerous electricity poles near the nests of the Egyptian Vulture started in 2012 under the LIFE+ roject “The Return of the Neophron”. At the end of the year, we can summarise that a total of more than 5200 electricity poles of various types were mapped along 500 km power lines in Bulgaria. The mapped dangerous poles fall into 14 breeding territories of Egyptian Vultures within the terrritories of 9 Natura 2000 areas. Unfortunately, many dead birds were found under the electricity poles and wires. The 89 victims found belonged to the following species: White and Black Stork, Short-toed Eagle, Common Buzzard, Goshawk, Sparrowhawk, Raven, Tawny Owl, Roller and many songbirds.

В миналото в България са гнездили четири вида лешояда – брадат, черен, белоглав и египетски. Днес могат да се видят само белоглавият и египетският лешояд. Опазването на белоглавия лешояд е една от най-успешните дейности на БДЗП.

Four species of vultures were breeding in Bulgaria in the past – Bearded vulture, Black vulture, Griffon vulture, and Egyptian vulture. Today, only the Griffon vulture and Egyptian vulture can be seen in our territory. Preservation of Griffon vulture is one of the most successful activities of the BSPB. Data from the monitoring, carried out already for the 29th consecutive year, show that in the late 80s breeding pairs were only 13, while in recent years have seen a gradual increase in the population of reporting in the current year 75 pairs.

Their goal is a control and timely removal from the countryside poison baits and animals that might cause additional poisoning. The Anti-poison dog units patrolled the countryside, in areas regularly used by Egyptian vultures and other two vulture species, the griffon and black vulture. Priority was given to patrols in areas where poison events had been recorded in the recent past or new incidents had been notified by forestry service, management bodies of national parks and citizens.

The IVAD will be also celebrated on 9th of September (Friday), in Haskovo, where BSPB will organize “Festival of the birds”. The event will be held on “Svoboda” square, as part of the program, dedicated to the “Days of Haskovo”. There will be art workshop for the kids, where they can create birds, tortoises and snakes; they can paint their faces as vultures, and also take pictures as Egyptian vultures, Griffon vultures or Black vultures. An exhibition with the best pictures of the photo competition “The Egyptian Vultures Odyssey” will be shown to the visitors for the first time.

This Sunday, the citizens of the village Iasmos gathered in the Cultural Center in order to be introduced to LIFE+ project "The return of the Neophron" by the team of WWF Greece. The presentation aimed to present the project core activities and bring closer the Egyptian vulture profile. The species status and its main threats were presented, thus the importance of the species conservation efforts were emphasized. Moreover the participants were informed about other highly significant birds of prey in the area, as there have been recorded 28 different bird of prey species like golden eagle, griffon and black vulture, white-tailed eagle, imperial eagle. At the end an interesting discussion about the Egyptian vulture and the nature conservation in general was achieved with the 25 participants. We are gratefully thanked to the Cultural Club of Iasmos for co-organizing the presentation.

Unlike the land predators and scavengers who carry the meat around and could potentially spread diseases, the aerial scavengers could rarely carry a disease from a mammal. When they finish feeding they fly away to the high cliffs and have no direct contact with other mammals. The acidity of their gastric juice is exceptionally high and practically kills every pathogen that gets into their digestive tract. The vultures also use the UV radiation to kill any remaining pathogens on their plumage as they mainly use passive flight with wings widely spread. They may not be clean, but they have their own mechanisms for preventing the spread of the diseases they have direct contact with through their food.

In March the installation of trail camera in one of Egyptian vulture nest in Thrace was carried out. Then we had been waiting with impatience for their arrival. Despite the fact that the pair finally decided to nest in different niche, they have visited the nest with the camera several times according to the stored photos. It is important to mention that the first time when the pair visited the old nest was the day of the beginning of incubation. Moreover, it seems that the male was more common visitor then the female. Due to individually specific black spots on the facial skin, the birds may be distinguished one from another. Beside the Egyptian vulture pair, there was evidence of another species "stopovers" inside the nest. There were pictures of black stork, ravens, red-rumped swallow and blue-rock thrush.

The most abundant bird of prey along thetransects was the Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus) with a total of ca. 300 individuals. Other interesting raptors recorded during the survey were the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), the Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus), the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), the Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetus), the Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina), the Booted Eagle (Aquila pennata), the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), the Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), the Merlin (Falco columbarius) etc.

It is characterized by low hills and sub-mountainous areas covered with deciduous forests with oaks, ashes, hornbeams and scrubland. Natural perennial oak forests had been replaced with pine reforestations 40 years ago. Most of plantations have been burnt in 2009 and 2011 and left in their natural regeneration without new reforestations. A natural forest with mature Black Pines is included in the southern part of the site, next to Delta of Evros which is an important nesting and roosting area for raptors. White-tailed Eagle nests here and together with the nest of Dadia National Park, are the unique two pairs in Evros region. Over 45 Spotted Eagles roost on the Black Pines during their wintering. Many cliffs occur in the site with the most impressive the ones of Avantas gorge. Rare plant species like Eriolobus trilobatus as well as endemic butterfly species have been recorded in this site.

The slopes surrounding the dam are covered with mixed broadleaf forests of oak and hornbeam, bushes of Christ’s thorn, white jasmine, prickly juniper and a variety of grass communities. A considerable part of the area is occupied by rock complexes. The animals here include: Balkan glass-snake, Aesculapian snake, Hermann’s and spur-thighed tortoises, black-eared wheatear, Sardinian warbler, black stork, wolf, beech marten, wild boar, fallow deer et al.

A total of 112 dead birds were found under the mapped pylons and power lines in Bulgaria, of which 76% were victims of electrocution and 24% of collision. There was only one case of a subadult Egyptian vulture found electrocuted within the project area. The 112 carcasses found belonged to the following species: White and Black stork (47%), Golden eagle, Short-toed eagle, Common buzzard, Goshawk, Sparrowhawk, Commom kestrel (18%), Passeriformes (25%, out of which corvids 11%), Tawny owl and Eagle owl (4%), other (6%). No electrocuted birds were found in Greece.

On 29th of July, in relation to the communication programme of “The Return of the Neophron”LIFE+ project and the initiativOpen Doors of the BSPB Vulture Centre, fourteen employees including the Mayor of Madzharovo Municipality – eng. Armutliev, visited the new exposition in the BSPB Nature Conservation Cntre Eastern Rhodopes. They had the opportunity to learn more about the current status of the biodiversity in the region, with emphasis on the four European vultures, three out of which could be seen around Mazdharovo (the Griffon, Cinereous and Egyptian vulture). Special attention was put on the most threatened raptor in Europe – the Egyptian vulture, and the actions implemented under the LIFE+ project on a local level where the BSPB and the Municipality could collaborate in future, i.e. development of the tourism and livestock sector in the area, co-organizing communication events and work with children. Behalf the new exposition in the vulture’s centre, the guests had the opportunity to see in reality the first flights of the juveniles Griffon vultures from the Kovan Kaya’s colony. As a fabulous final of the meeting, an Egyptian vulture flew few meters above the heads of the guests.
