The official activity of the Symposium began on 16 August 2003 from the Plenary Session. Ms. Carin Jamtin, Minister of International Development and Cooperation of Sweden opened the Water Week. In her speech she pointed to that the current problems of water stress and deficit are related to rapid growth in urbanization. Investments in water sector are globally increasing, that is why there is a possibility to solve growing problems. The new Swedish strategy in regard to water says: everybody should have a virtue to manage his/her life, using water carefully. Today the international development organizations are not able to solve problems without contribution of everyone. Line of conduct and priorities in the countries that are given international assistance for water sector should be defined with broader participation of population but not by politicians. There is no place for alternatives “business as usual”.

В своем выступлении она подчеркнула, что для решения современных проблем глобального и регионального водного стресса и дефицита воды необходимо развитие демократии и общественной кооперации. Новая шведская стратегия в отношении воды гласит - каждый должен иметь мужество управлять своей жизнью, бережно относясь к воде.
The official activity of the Symposium began on 22 August 2005 from a plenary session. Ms Lena Sommestad, Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Sweden, launched the Water Week. In her speech, she emphasized that for solving the current global and regional water stress and deficit it is necessary to develop the democracy and public cooperation. The new Swedish water strategy states that everybody should have courage to manage his life, regarding water with care. International development organizations are not now able to solve problems without everybody’s contribution. Line of behavior and priorities in countries that are given international assistance for water sector should be determined through broad participation of population, but not by politicians. There is no place for options like “business as usual” any more.
